Steemit: misuse of Downvoting is killing content

in steemit •  8 years ago

I've wrote a number of articles related to the standard of content on this site. Discussing why good content is important to the long term future of Steemit.

Yet a new phenomenon of apparent Downvoting for no obvious reason threatens to hamper the publication and consumption of many articles.

Everyone has a right to an opinion but only when it's justified. There's a lot of high earning crap about which deserves some reward correction. However simple advice offering posts without grammatical errors should be treated with respect.

For example I've wrote posts advising of possible hacks in which people have lost real money and provided basic advice for securing those accounts. Only to be downvoted upto 50% off the original reward total. For what reason I don't know.

My suggestions to Steemit are;

Downvoters should be clearly listed and asked to state a reason for doing so.

Downvoting should be disabled for posts valued under $100.

So let's play nice everyone. Sure some young lass in a tight t shirt making cakes isn't worth $10k (they still earns thousands even with a few downvotes) . But let's think about the smaller fish who form the vast majority. Please stop Downvoting unless there's an obvious reason to.

Steemit is a privilege not a right.

Ahh sweet, sweet oblivion.
They do it because there is no penalty and almost no risk of getting caught at the moment.

My opinion, you're spot on. All of you even the guy warning about retaliation.

Mod wars are perfectly natural in a system like this.
Some jack ass down modding you for no reason deserves to be called out and back modded into oblivion. Not just by you, but by all the people that have to dig through and find your content because of said jerk,

What stopped nuclear war from ever becoming an issue was the concept of MAD or Mutually Assured Destruction.
If someone can downvote, then there must be a way the system is recording it. If there is a record then there is a way to find said jack ass and nuke him.

The best solution would be the formation of a vigilante pool for hire. Including creation of a tool, being either a site or browser plugin to report false down mods, uncover who did it and downvote their most lucrative works that day into a crater.

"Downvoters should be clearly listed and asked to state a reason for doing so." I'm not sure if this wouldn't start retaliation "wars" etc... you down voted my post?!? I'll go and down vote all of your posts.

Yes it may - hence the suggestion about stating a reason for downvoting.

Downvoting is important to clean spam from the network. Making downvoting even more difficult is a bad idea IMO.

I don't feel this would make it more difficult. Just less easy for trolls to go round downmarking articles for no good reason.

This is a tricky question to answer. Yes, down-voting is an obvious way to control spam and cliche content in the site but with coming of bots in the picture, it gets little dirty. Also, when it comes to money, people can get vindictive and down-vote an authentic and high quality information.
