What is AKASHA?
AKASHA is a next-generation social media network powered by Ethereum and the InterPlanetary File System. Vitalik Buterin is on the AKASHA team as well as Mihai Alisie, Bitcoin Magazine creator and Ethereum co-founder. Among 6 other team members.
AKASHA ( [aːkaːʃə], आकाश) is the Sanskrit word meaning “ether” in both its elemental and metaphysical senses. The ancient Sanskrit-speaking civilization envisioned akasha as a metaphysical information network connecting humanity with itself and infinite knowledge. In this paradigm, thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences are stored forever and shared through the ether, which acts as an universal field connecting multiple planes of existence.
It seems as if Mihai Alise is excited to be working alongside master mind, Vitalik Buterin.
“Ever since I joined Vitalik [Buterin] in the Ethereum project as cofounder in late 2013, I’ve dreamed about the ways Ethereum could be used to solve some of the biggest issues we face as a civilization,” says Alisie. “However, it wasn’t until early 2015 when I first realized that we are about to create the missing puzzle piece that will enable us to tackle two of the most important challenges we face today as a modern information-based society: freedom of expression and creative perpetuity.”
Features on http://akasha.world/ include:
- Publishing content on the Ethereum blockchain.
- You can share content on the blockchain.
- You can vote on content on the blochcain.
- AKASHA will be open soure as well.
Reward System
The votes are bundled with Ethereum micro transactions so if you publish good content, you’ll make Ethereum from it. That's all that we know about the reward system at the moment.
AKASHA'S Belief
Akasha believe's that freedom of expression, access to information, and privacy are fundamental human rights that should be respected on the Internet as well as in real life. Moreover, AKASHA is a civilization transitioning to an information-based society, and as such we feel that the permanent storage of information for future generations is a critical issue we should be striving to solve as soon as possible.
Something Interesting:
Will there be a token crowdsale?
In the first phase ETH will be the native token used inside the AKASHA ecosystem. We chose to focus first on building a working decentralized application and learning from the actual use what sorts of problems we should be solving with a custom token. Depending on our findings we might do a crowdsale, but most likely not by the time we launch the beta.
Similarities with Steemit include:
- Both are on a Blockchain.
- Both are open source.
- Both reward their user's.
Difference's with Steemit include:
- While Steemit is on an independant blockchain, AKASHA is on the Ethereum blockchain.
- AKASHA rewards their user's with Ethereum, while Steemit rewards with SD.
Conclusion
In the near future, Steemit will have a lot of competors including, Yours, DECENT, and AKASHA. What the advantage for Steemit is that when these networks are going to be in Beta, Steemit will be converting out of a Beta which means Steemit is way ahead of these and probably will do better in the long run.
Until Next Time!
Competition is actually good both for users and developers. Users will be producing good quality content and developers will be improving platform by incorporating better properties.

Not sure there is going to be enough room for so many similar platforms. We already have Steemit and Synereo has been in the works for ages. There was also another one recently which was supposed to launch but don't know what happened to it - seemed to just go quiet.

I don't understand why it will be direct competition, when both are blockchain based. Can't we just use a client to merge both? I also want extensible by the user blockchain. For example, I want to further tag this article and I want to tag my own comments. I also want tags to be more than simple words. I want tags like "University of Minnesota" or whatever to be traceable to that organization, so that I can include them in the conversation. It'll be like replacing email, messaging, etc. I also want badges, like "Bachelor of Engineering" to be traceable to an academic institution.

Who is paying the gas for my account? What part of Akasa is on the Ethereum blockchain, and what part is in some IPFS address?
