Vlog 18: Giving up on Steemit Posts

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

I'm no longer going to play at Steemit's casino. When I post it will not be to try to hit the jackpot anymore. Everyone is writing trying to make money and I'm not playing that game anymore. This is just another place to post my videos and if they earn then cool. If they don't then cool :) Leave a comment below for some upvotes.

I think that is the right attitude. When you do things for love, the money inevitably will follow (sooner or later). People that are posting for money are looking at things backwards IMO. Money is the effect of a fulfilling life and doing this you love, not the cause of it.

Until there is a tip button, it is all just fishing for whales.

A tip button would be a great addition! A one step action to donate STEEM or STEEM Dollars to a particular post or profile.

How's it going @trevonjb ?
You and a few other people are whose videos I saw before joining up myself last week. Since then, I've had to come to the same conclusion. There are so many people here who walked in with such high expectations that they ended up disappointed.

I'm one of them.

I'm a photographer with 18 years experience and TONS of content to post. None of it made very much. In fact, I found that simply replying other people's posts (particularly the more influential big fish) has helped me earn more money than what I've earned with my own stuff. The key is to jump in there and offer some insight or point that others can get down with. In the past 36 hours, I've made over $700 from 2 replies to posts made by whales. My own content made maybe $60-80.
So, I'm flipping my script and only posting when I know something could potentially be hot. Otherwise, my main focus is going to be to try and make conversation. Interact with others, be human to them, let them know I know they're human too.
So far, it's working. Go figure, right? ;-)

I see what you did there....

I understand your thinking on this. It will be interesting to see how it changes the reward system after the hardfork is completed tomorrow.

It works though. lol
There's already an incentive in this place not to be assholes to one another, so intelligent conversation could very well go a long way. Besides, what better place than to make money while making friends? There's no reason we can't get to a point where we start recognizing each other's names...like I did here. The video of yours I saw was you driving in your car, talking about the pennies slowly rising when you get your upvotes.

This is the way content should be produced. Do your own thing, if people like it that's fine. If they don't, that's fine. But at least you've expressed the way you liked.

Can't blame you man

I right there with you Trevon :)

It's pointless chasing the money as it may never come we may aswell enjoy what we're doing and if one day we get lucky then that's fine. keep posting and smiling :)

Never give up. Steemit is an emotional ride (aka social media) Live yours and do you!!

Hi! I really appreciate your perspective. I think the value of content here is in it being organically produced and genuine. Keep posting your insights, I am following!

That's the way to go@trevonjb. Love your vids :)

Commenting and voting been my only way in the means of trying to gain cash, like you stated its really catered money wise for the people with power. I voted for u just now and turned your 26 cents to 85 cents with the help of a few others just now, guess I'm gaining some small power!

To make better content or become better, people are given the power to help influence their creative works. commenting is one of them :)

This is the way to go. I've posted a rant a couple days ago and also changed the way I'm approaching steemit from now on. I'll talk about my true passions and try to write good stuff.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

The new rules started tomorrow will make so making more than 4 post in a 24r will penalize the payout of the post. This should make people more focused on providing good content and making less spam post that just that are clogging the system.

where did you find this information at? got an article?

The first concern when publishing a post should be make it as good as possible, not making money out of it.
So I fully support your statement

I wholly agree with your sentiments Trevon. Steemit has descended into the uber-whack realm. It has unfortunately been a huge disappointment so far for the majority of the users.

Well I don't know about that but there's certainly a lot to improve. Success is already on their side and they really need to implement key features like Trevor here mentioned (notifications, following, communities maybe). Right now it's a complete mess full of spam and mediocre 5-10k posts, we can all see that.

I think right now part of the problem is insufficient voters compared to posters. That and the disproportionate voting power of the whales. Perhaps a mechanism where you had to vote a certain number of times before being able to post would help.

As with anything, success comes with time, effort, and perseverance. Part of the issue is that Steemit's user base is still relatively small and only and small number of members have enough STEEM Power to cast votes to make a post big money. That will slowly change over time as more and more people join and the early adopters start accumulating larger amounts of STEEM Power. Todays "minnows" will become tomorrow's "dolphins" whose votes will be worth much more. Just keep working on developing a following on the platform and in a year or two it may start becoming lucrative for you. Just wait for your "minnows" following you to morph into dolphins later. Given the rate of compound interest for STEEM Power holders, it won't take a long time before the early adopters start accumulating some serious voting power (and wealth!)

Just found your videos. I like your style. I'm not someone who watches videos - more of a reader than a content creator :P - but I'm gonna follow you and watch your stuff. You have a good point of view
