What Are Steem Witnesses and what have they done?

What are witnesses and what have they done?
There's a lot of mixed information on Steemit as to what a witness does, they are a person who operates a server, which produces blocks and publishes a price feed of Steem tokens to Us Dollars.

Steemit is a social platform powered by a decentralized blockchain called Steem. Steem is based on graphene which is powering Bitshare also. It's delegated proof of stake blockchain which work are different to another consensus to finding algorithms, like Bitcoin proof of work and other coins with proof of stake. Not every stakeholder or participant takes part in the block producting process. Only a selected few which are voted by the stakeholders. The witnesses are basically the ones securing the blockchain, managing your transactions and making a consensus between different node. You can run your own note but you will always get your data from the witnesses.

Basically, the witnesses are like governors of the federal reserve system. Witnesses secure the blockchain that means that they collectively decide on the version of Steemit is running and where Steemit will go. If developers or somebody else comes up with an idea. Like changing the setting which requires a hard fork and the basics of the chain like how SBD are created. Another word, the developers are kind of like the mayor wants to change something and you guys the city council, can either say yes or no.

The witnesses also expected to provide an ongoing price feed of Steem tokens in U.S. dollars. The witnesses are generally voted for because they are trusted members of the community. Witnesses are expected to keep a block-producing Steem node running 24 hrs a day and 7 days a week. They are rewarded for their services and running their node by getting powered up by one Steem for each block they produce. They create the Steem blockchain in real time every 3 seconds. Every 63 second, we are trusting the top 20 witnesses to produce one block for us. The top 50 witnesses from 21 to 50 produce blocks every hour to every minute. How much they get paid? They get roughly 1400 SP per day. Per month they get roughly 42,500 SP and per year they get about 510,000 SP

Here are the top witnesses

Voting
They get voted in by people like us. It's just like an election if you don't vote, other people may vote in witnesses who are malicious or simply unreliable. They are paid to how high they are in the witness ranks. You can vote to approve a witness. When you've decided to vote, go to Steemit's top witnesses page find their account and vote. Your account is limited to approving 30 witness accounts. https://steemd.com/witnesses

Can anyone become a witness?
The answer is: The answer is YES

To become a witness, you require these steps.

  • You must have trust from the community
  • A powerful and reliable server
  • A powerful server with excellent bandwidth to operate Steem
  • Creating a signing key then broadcasting your intent to become a witness
  • An accurante price feed of Steem to USD which is updated once a day
  • You should understand most Steem concepts

Hi @vaansteam, thank you so much for explaining what witnesses are in such plain English. I understood it at my first reading. Normally it takes me two three times to go throw the post to fully understand as I am new in this crypto currency field and as a new Steemien. I already voted 3 people for being witness but didn’t know then what they are. Thank god , I didn’t utilize all of my 30 voting power. Will check their profile more carefully in the future before voting more. Thank you for the post , will look forward to read more post from you. Going to read your previous posts as well.

Thank you for your awesome comment. It was my pleasure! I'm glad you took the time to vote for the witness. Hope you do well on this platform! Have a wonderful day!

I'm new to crypto too, and I don't even know what a block is. Could you or @vaansteam explain? Other than that, the rest I think I understand -- great article!

A blockchain is a technology invented in 2008 to power bitcoin. HOw it work is a block is a record of new transactions, that could mean the location of cryptocurrency, or medical data, or even voting records, creating a chain of blocks which is a blockchain. @sungazer

What a wonderful explanation! The very best I've seen since I've been here.

Witnesses are vitally important to Steemit. Right now they are facing a pretty epic question regarding the allocation of bandwidth to the platform as a whole and to the blockchain specifically. There are several options, and somebody isn't going to like what ever they decide. But it must be done and I for one am incredibly glad that we have freely elected stakeholders involved in the process.

That’s really nice you to say. I tried to make it clear as possible because there’s a lot of mixed information out there. Thank you for pointing that out, very useful information:)

I can see how important it is now to vote for a witness but I don't even know what a good witness looks like. How do I know if the witness is competent in what they do?

A good witness is trusted by the community, someone who been around for awhile. They should have good reputation and always willing to help others!

Hey@vaansteam! Thank you for this post, it's cleared up a lot of unclarity in my mind about what Witnesses do, excellent! Thank you for following, upvoted and following. :) Peace.

Your welcome, hope all is well! @fiercewarrior

I saw steem witness on someone's post but didn't have any idea what it meant, thank you for this explanatory post.

I hope i made it clear for you :) @chiama

Yes you did

🙂

Hmm, this is what I've been looking for. I've been asking around about the main purposes of these witnesses. Thank you for sharing this info @vaansteam

You’re very welcome, glad I can help @beverlyjoe

By my understanding, the Steemit platform is large enough such that there is the need for a set of people to manage the affairs and that's what the witnesses do.

Your statement here explains it all.

Basically, the witnesses are like governors of the federal reserve system.

Thanks for educating.

You’re very welcome! Thank you for pointing that out. @rharphelle :)

I appreciate that, thank you very much!

Nice to know! Thanks!

Happy to help :) @aagr

Great post, I have only just started looking at witnesses. I am going to leave a link & suggest a vote for @dragosroua for his work on creating a very useful site...just delete my name & add your own. http://www.steem.supply/@professorhobo

I’ll have to look into that, thanks for the suggestion:)

Thanks for posting good info about voting for witness. I have recently voted for some witnesses and still observing. This is good info for newbies.

Your welcome, it help us to understand a little more about the system @fun2learn

You need to get trust by the community first. Witness get 1 steem power for every block. They created 1 every 3 seconds.

Great information! You answered a bunch for me! The read was easy to understand, I’ve read a lot of blogs on people trying to inform newbies like myself.. but it hasn’t helped much .. I actually understood some of ur content! Thanks for sharing!! Slowly but surely I’m going forward &learning!! 😁

Thank you @mamaber72, that’s very nice of you to say. Yes, I know there’s a lot of information out there but it’s abit confusing even for me. So I had to put it together and make it easier to understand. I really appreciate you taking you time and commenting on my post! I know you will succeed! Keep going my friend!

No sabía nada de lo que leí. Gracias por eso...se nota que soy nuevo

Thanks. I've been wondering if I should set up a server to become a steem witness. Is it true that only the top 20 actually make any decent money?

Yes, if you want to you're welcome to that. The top 50, 21 to 50 also get decent paid. @simonhbosch

Thank you @vaansteam for making a transfer to me for an upvote of 1.46% on this post! Half of your bid goes to @budgets which funds growth projects for Steem like our top 25 posts on Steem! The other half helps holders of Steem power earn about 60% APR on a delegation to me! For help, will you please visit https://jerrybanfield.com/contact/ because I check my discord server daily? Informative post - pity about this though .. (1 of 6 machine bid bot upvotes on a single post)

Yes, it’s not that profitable but it will help to promote

When I studied medcine many years ago, we were taught ethical behaviour doesn't condone paying adverts to promote our service. Only reputation in a community should make a doctor popular or less popular. Hence I think doctors are respected. In this situation here, upvotes show that many like your content and so your content is good. But if you pay for it, then people will wonder if you are honourable, trustworthy, honest, or even if you have any thing to share at all.

We have a saying in my village that goes, if you eat with pigs, you lose good friends.

People have been using upvote bot, a lot of big names are using it if you check. I know its kind of controversial topic. Some people think upvote bot is bad and they shouldn't use them. I think it actually they're a good thing if you're writing good content. So far I spent countless hrs writing content.I just wanted my post to be seen more and help people on the platform, with that being said. I always try to be honest. If I lose a friend for doing that then, it's my lose :) @oneazania

People have been paying voters to vote them into power for many years too, it doesn't make it right. For the record, I see the arguments for such actions a lot, but I wonder if you were in a voting booth for national elections, would you vote for the candidate who paie many people to vote for him? I think, regardless if he were Jesus Christ or the Dalai Lama, you and I would not vote for him or her. Unless the politics was so bad that we said 'okay, this was the only way for him to gain power - and we can firmly say, she or he we believe will do good when he gets there'- but it is a hard decision, right? Or another example, if you were dying and needed a surgeon, would you choose the one who paid for his medical degree and for many friends who keep him in business, or the one who earned it and lives a modest life?

I believe that there are many good people and they out number the unscrupulous people. Eventually, these abuses like paying to advance faster than others, will be illiminated eithger by a hardfork or by the platform dying away because people see it as a scam or the pool becomes so depleted because 'everyone is doing it so it must be ok' attitude.

I see your content is good. The type of writer I would prefer to bend my own rules and follow anyway. I wish you luck and I appreciate your honest answer. Take care.

Hey Vaan, like a lot of new steemies, I had no idea of this Witness concept until I ran across a post where it was mentioned and thought huh????

Clear though your post is, there are aspects of this that I still can't quite get my head around. And that got me thinking...why isn't there a steemit page filled with FAQs, a Glossary of terminology/word definitions and a super clear set of guidelines. Maybe I have missed it, is there one? Does such a thing exist? If so where might I find it?

Part of the challenge on here for people new to steemit is being able to discern and understand what's going on from all the countless posts available here about how to use this site, what its advantages (and pitfalls) are, about cryptocurrency, block chain technology and bots, resteeming bots and so on, and there seems to be a HUGE amount of knowledgeable people who try to help out. And while there are lots of videos about this in all the usual places, invariably they reflect the point of view of the person, NOT the community as a whole. Would you agree, I'm excited to hear (or more accurately...read) your views? ⭐️

I do agree with you that site hasn't been very clear, I was confused myself when I first started. But I took all my time into studying and learning everything that goes around the platform. And I try to make it easy for new users to understand. I'm glad you're pointing that out. Hope you will get everything in no time! Best wish to you! @lilygolightly
