Please, Flip the Script.
Steem is a major opportunity for content creators and curators around the globe. Unprecedented. Right now, people around the world are clamoring to get in and get posting. This is the first and only functioning crypto-powered SoMe site in existence. Yet, the conversation is clouded by complaining... a lot of it. Twitter and Reddit forums have turned into an unfortunate mosh pit of questions surrounding Steem account approval times.
This doesn't need to be the focus. Steemit is not at all like facebook or instagram where you walk in and they hand you the keys. Steemit.com is in beta. The special sauce is still marinating in preparation for the masses. It also costs a small fortune to onboard new users everyday (delegation of at least ~15 Steem per user, approximately $50 USD). So what can we do in the mean time? Let's highlight what makes this different, celebrate the fact that there's a HUGE LINE to get in. Flip the script.
Long sign-up times shouldn't be a detrimental feature of the Steem ecosystem... especially when the existing waitlist could be exhibited in a way to actually drive value and build excitement. Here's an example, Robinhood.
"Get Early Access"
Robinhood is a stock trading app that boasts zero fees and a sexy interface. It's got a slick marketing campaign, and a MASSIVE waiting list. When they announced that the platform would begin trading cryptocurrencies, a flood of people signed up... over 1,000,000 people.
Steemit Should do the Same
When people begin signing up... they should be cognizant of the Beta and the opportunity surrounding it.
Steemit Inc. is willing to front $50 USD to create an account for ME. This is exclusive. A ton of people want in on this. I'm part of the Beta class... I'm excited about this!
Celebrate it.
However many are on the waitlist now (I have no idea) we should broadcast it on the signup page. So here's a concept graphic I created that really wouldn't require much adaptation from the existing onboard process. It's ultimately a branding and marketing tweak. And heck, Steemit already has the same color palette as Robinhood. So why not? What do you think of this design, Steemit?
People are trying to get onboard as much as they can, more and more every day. Many are waiting, some have even stopped wondering whether or not they get on the platform! I have tried to convince a few to come back, but after three attempts failing every time, it is hard to convince someone to give it another go using yet another platform such as utopian.io or anonsteem...
Having a level, showing how fast people are being on-boarded as well as where they stand in the line might actually be super useful to get people to target their own Steemit Access May!?!
Thanks a lot for all this information, it looks great and it is easy to understand to.
Namaste :)

That's a great idea @eric-boucher, some sort of progress bar with an estimated time / level! Even if it's 3 months away it'll help set expectations.

agreed, very good idea @eric-boucher

I totally agree with you, the long approval time has not been seen as a failure in the platform that can not be entered. we ourselves promote it that way ... and we should not highlight its strong points, its excellent qualities that make it special.

Woow...! Love that contrasts... and by the way I think the Visual Marketing for Cryptos goes by this Neon look nowadays, a touch of future, speed and electricity implicit.
By the other side I think that waiting times for get an account should not be a problem. The real problem is that people in this crazy times forgot something called patience. Seems that everything must be NOW! and in a second is already OLD.
You can see it in anywhere, patience to get an account, patience to think in content, to make it real, to wait for votes, to learn, to trade, to hodl, to Steem going to the moon.
And going back to the design, the Neon lights has that message implicit as I can see... the low light that keeps you awake for the right time to reach what you want, and after that... Sleep to start again.
Peace V!

Patience, absolutely @leotrap! Thank you for the wise words :)
Also I recently watched Thor Ragnarok, so that might explain some of the neon, haha.

It's a great idea, it can work very well. But it's not completely true.
Because there are not 1,000,000 but 7,600,000,000 people in line :)

I didn't know there was such a long waiting list right now! You're right, it should be used to drive excitement. Even for those of us who are already on Steemit, it makes us feel like more exclusive members.
I also forgot about the fact that they just give each new member 15 steem power. I just realized something disconcerting: is there anything stopping people from just making a lot of separate accounts and pooling the steem power in one? (with the delay of withdrawal of course).

Hey @erb! Well, as I mentioned I really don't know how many are waiting... hopefully it's a lot! To your question... Steemit used to give out Steem Power directly to new accounts. But now they actually delegate ~15 SP to each new user and then take it back after a few months (once that user accumulates enough SP of their own to perform basic actions on the platform).
Back in the old days - there was a lot of concern over abuse. (Though each new account is vetted / forced to provide a phone number and email etc.) Luckily long onboarding and delegation resolves some risk. Anyway, it's a huge cost on behalf of Steemit Inc! Time wise and cost wise. Ultimately, this platform is super exclusive. Let's celebrate it!

I completely forgot about the $50 worth of steem, that is a much bigger deal than people may be aware of. I heard that Steem is on one of the premiere investment group's "must own, long term" list. Free steem ain't nothing to frown at, let alone the opportunity to earn a lot more.

It's pretty wild, just over a year ago new accounts started with 50 Steem! (Not even delegated, just 50 Steem Power.) Inc. has spent a lot making new accounts, if people understood that I bet they would be willing to wait longer for account approvals.

That looks like absolute common sense. So many good ideas floating around but is anyone even listening / reading ? Who can do something about it ? It would be good if the people responsible for advancing Steemit stepped up and identified themselves. They could even ask for voluntary contributions, people could chip in for this or that improvement proposal so that they see which one is considered better ...

Gooo steemit!
To me steemit is a sanctuary of free thought and real life. A place where you can just blog about what you have going on in life and complete strangers wish you well and root you on. You can talk about things that are important to you and others from around the world can comment and share experiences.
Steemit is a destination for journeyers. People that explore around the world. We like to read about new things and different perspectives that we can't get from the news or from other social media.
Yes you can receive free cryptocurrency for participating at Steemit, and that is what brings a lot of people to the site.
Steemit offers freedom. Freedom to express yourself and an investment into possible economic freedom. You won't get rich posting on Steemit, but you can make a nice little bonus in crypto each month if you stick with it. It's not easy, but then again, it doesn't seem like work if you love being here. It is just a bonus. The community is the reason this site will grow.
Recently I Red that customers in California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana and New Hampshire are now able to trade bitcoin and ethereum through the app beginning this February, Robinhood has announced. In the meantime, all customers can now track prices and receive alerts for 16 cryptocurrencies on the app which is an amazing news.

Yeah, I heard a lot about waiting time issue on FB pages and you gave a better suggestion for coping with it. Like due to huge number of applications, Bittrex ceased to open new accounts and most people ignore that they still offer to make an account on support.bittrex.com and send us a request with the reason about why do you need this account and few other details. I just did that and my account was approved in a week's time.
