Steemit - Does it really work?

I heard about Steem this past Saturday. I learned about blockchains and their infrastructure that same day. Sure, I've heard of bitcoin and the benefits it has by solving the "double-spending" problem. However, to be honest, I never really dig into it.

I've asked Sunday, internally, over and over again... "Is Steem really real?", "Can normal people -- especially newcomers -- have the ability to earn value from their writings?"

It seems very hard to believe. The reason I say this is because on the little research I completed during the weekend, I noticed that now even within Steem, there are certain influential groups named "Whales" which can dilute greatly the opportunity for newcomers to have a great opportunity to enter this unique market.

I am a bit skeptical at this point given that this is my first post ever. I have many ideas and food-for-thought to share even in Spanish, which is my first language. But even then, by posting in Spanish, I am not really sure if I would have such a successful acknowledgment since there are not enough Spanish readers at this point.

I have faith in Steemit. And I really hope that through this platform my life can be changed for the better. Thanks.
