Chapter I - Letter to You

in steemit •  7 years ago
Dear brother, dear sister,
I hope my words reach you in a merry moment of your life, or they may comfort you in the darkest night, like a lantern that cuts through the darkness and draws the way back home. I find myself far away from my loved ones, as often happens to you too. I am consumed with trying to meet them again soon, even though they do not know it. Or rather, they are not aware of how much my thoughts are slaves to this desire. Like two magnets, our souls try to rejoin, only to reject each other when we have just barely touched.

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (“The Great Gatsby”, by Francis Scott Fitzgerald)

But know that I want the best for you, I hope life smiles on you and that you are working assiduously to find your real self. Do not be afraid, be patient. The greatest gift given to us is time. Although it may seem miserable and insolent, it is sometimes the only thing left to us.

I feel older than yesterday. I think my mind is now at an advanced stage of senility and I do not know how I will arrive at the landing of the 30s. I intensely hope that in my case this will result in greater awareness and wisdom. I sense my thoughts and feelings migrating in a precise direction. Upstream. In stubborn and opposite direction. But air here seems lighter, like the first caress given to an infant. I had the opportunity to think about your words. I tried to put my thoughts in order, taking care of them as the swallow has of its nest. I made new revelations. Here. In the kingdom of wonder. I had brushed them in various circumstances, but every time they flew at the toll of my steps. But not anymore.

We are drugged and subjugated to appearance, deluded to be able to lead a life free of pain and suffering. Powerless beings seduced by their image and frightened by their own shadow. Atarassic and corrupt, we sell our mercy, our hope and our faith, believing in the false promise of controlling existence. We are scared. Empty. So we swell up like peacocks and boast the superiority of our choices, our opinions, our possessions and our beliefs. We cry at night and smile in front of the camera. We helplessly accept the deception. And we wait ...

... until the fragile foundations of our golden palace collapse under the terrible blows inflicted by the only law to which we are all subjected: chaos. The masks fall and the curtain closes. But the real show begins.

With hesitant steps we move the veil of ignorance away and vacillate in the labyrinth of doubt. But we do not close our eyes anymore. We accompany silence to the rhythm of our breath. And we start remembering. Voices, smells, tastes and memories come to the surface. An unstoppable tide that drags us and throws us with tremendous vehemence into the unknown. A lifeless body and an abandoned mind.

At last, we know what it means to be alone. We are ready. Ready to accept a sad departure without any honor ...

... when suddenly one, ten, hundreds, thousands, millions, countless hands appear from the darkness, slowly lifting us up in the ether.

A warm, intimate womb surrounds us. Now we see them. Now we hear them. In the past, silent and invisible unknown bystanders. Today, unexpected brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers and children. They trace the path to the shouts of the rebellion and the clanging of the swords. An endless phalanx of proud souls that welcome us in their ranks. Our swan song, a sacrifice for utopia and dignity that will resonate as an inexhaustible echo in the universe. Our testament:

“To see a World in a Grain of Sand

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower

Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand

And Eternity in an hour.”

(from “Auguries of Innocence”, by William Blake)

The time has finally come …

... the time has come to violate one's own convictions and go against dogmas that we think are ours. Absolutes that have been inculcated and imposed by birth, or that we have built around us like an impregnable fortress.

“Truth is treason in the empire of lies” (George Orwell).

But I chose the arduous road and planted the seed. My tears, my sweat and my blood the fertilizer. You my scythe.

If I had been born here I would have had a completely different life, I would have been a different person and I would have seen the world with different eyes. We must not reject reality, as much as paltry and foreign it may appear to us. We have the task of understanding the limits of our society, to pacify and shape them in favor of the common good. To build a future that does not include only what our sight can grasp, but also listens to the distant sighs of brothers and sisters who are trying to break the chains of consumerism, indifference and poverty of mind that persecute us. Men and women who pursue the same mirage, until one day it will no longer be such. A silent and universally shared challenge. In different places, with different scars, but with same audacity and resilience. Imagining and aspiring to a better life in every corner of the world cannot and should not be a zero-sum game. We must change the parameters with which we evaluate the quality of our life, separating them from our material successes and elevating them to the feelings, emotions and memories of a courageous, honest and loving life. The only true legacy that we will leave at the end of our journey.

No man will ever be truly happy if his neighbor is not content as well. And the world around us will never live in peace and serenity if we abandon the only real battlefield: our consciousness. The soil is wet and heavy. We tiredly struggle, wounded and bent in the mud of fears, dissatisfactions and disappointments that this life has brought us. But we do not break. We go on. With resolute gaze and untamed spirit, we glow with knowledge and virtue. Taking a high guard and opening our hearts, we do not recede from the original duty to fight in our own daily little to strenuously defend, united and with valor, the ambition of a reality greater than the sum of our dreams.

Change your life, change them all.

And now, it begins…
