No.
It really is as simple an answer as that. Are you curious about how you get paid for your work? The site has a daily reward pool of a cryptocurrency called steem that gets divided by the members based on votes. The more units of the currency you have, the more weight of your vote. This let people get paid for their work and the more people who are using and hold steem the better the chance the coin goes up in value. This is how the company makes money, they have their own steem and like a stock, if it goes up in value that can sell it for more. Think of it like bitcoin, which is accepted by steam, the biggest video game company there is.
Maybe you are thinking, well of course this guy is going to say nice things about it, he is writing his post on steemit. I am writing this post on steemit. This is where I blog. There are several other blogging sites I could use that are free, even some that charge. I can get a cheap website and use wordpress to blog. But I choose to use this network. Why, because it is easier, it has paid me better than those sites do and there is a real possibility of the coin going up in value, so my 10 dollar post today could be worth a hundred in the future. Blockchain is the future and this is a site that does it right.
What else do you need to know? It is free. 100%. It is free to open an account, to post, to collect money and upvote other people's stuff. They even give you a small amount of steem to start. How can something be a scam that costs no money to use? You can, as with any cryptocurrency buy some if you want to, but it is, in no way, a prerequisite to use the site or continue to use it. You can post, literally, whatever you want and if you get the upvotes, you can make money for your content.
Period.
Try it and see for yourself.
If you're new and have any question, please feel free to put them in my comments :).

This is one of the most straightforward answer to the usual impressions by people who are cynical on making money online especially using free platforms. Steemit may sound too good to be true... but it is TRUE!

I was also worried when I started. I joined almost 2 months ago because it was free. I decided to deposit, but have since made, and withdrew some STEEM to test the system. It is a slight annoyance that I must first transfer to another wallet, but the system does work!
