Is Steemit Going To Switch To A More Democratic Voting System?

in steemit •  7 years ago

If you check out the trending page on steemit right now you will see a post by @happymoneyman and the changes coming to steemit. He mentions the next hardfork, number 20, which should bring faster on-boarding and possibly communities (sweet). But then there is a quote from the owner of steemit about the change to voting power. He thinks the power should be more democratic and include account-based voting in the algorithm. Account based means one account, one vote and is the most even when it comes to what becomes popular or not.

You might be wondering why we don't do that now. There are a couple of reasons. For one having a system where the more steem you have the stronger the vote encourages people to buy and hold steem. If steem doesn't have perks people will not hold it as much. There is also the problem of fake accounts and bots that can really skew the numbers. The goal is to make a system where people are encouraged to hold steem and we keep the voting as fair as possible. This will lead to new users having a better enjoyment of the site.

I am pushing for a more democratic site myself. We need to give the power to the people if you are going to have millions of users. There are a lot of people with steem power that are helping people but when we get to 10s of millions of post a day we will a more self-sustaining site. And this will let the content that people want to be at the top make it to the top. Maybe a mix of the two can get us to the point we need to be.

And communities will definitely help.

Looking forward to the changes to come.

There has to be something to level the playing field a bit. I'm not entirely sure how to do that but it sounds like they are trying. Trending and Hot sections tend to be a joke because their votes are paid for and their content sucks. More power to the people to dictate what is "trending" or "Hot" would be beneficial. Thanks for the heads-up.

I agree with you I think it should be a bit more just the subject of the votes, but I do not understand the part where you say that the votes in trend are paid

You like this post. Thank you

I think if you are producing excellent Content on a regular basis and you go about it in a smart way ( no not buying Bots votes) you will eventually start seeing some Results that will be satisfying. Maybe Iam a perpetual optimist but just from what I have seen it can be done. Not easy. But doable.

Thanks for this Post @whatageek :)

Yeah I support a system for the people , by the people and for the people. Steemit is gonna grow in value and in member and definitely rise to the top of the social media world

wow sound really nice looking forward to the changes

good post keep it up

I agree with you we must achieve a democratic place, but in truth it must be done little by little.

Sounds great!

I am anxious that the changes come a more democratic system would encourage me much more

Astonishing project..keep going..

The people with under 100 SP can post every 30 min

under 500 SP can post every 15 minutes

under 1000 SP can post every 10 minutes

over 2000 SP can post every 5 minutes

Then people need to choose more carefully what they post.

I think the voting system should change also and the algorythym should also include quality posts and participation also. This would help to balance the voting power away from just steem power that can be bought.

Many people with power are helping new ones in the network, so we are emerging. that encourages and motivates new users to grow.

I dont think the problem is with the voting system itself but the way in which greedy people manipulate the system to profit. Those with more SP have either invested their own money or loads of their time so should be rewarded with more power.

I think no matter the system and when there is money to be made people will be gaming the system to their advantage - will be interesting to see what eventuates

Lol uppp steemit....at the meme

If steem doesn't have perks people will not hold it as much

This is true, though maybe if it were a bit much more easier to earn, like take a selfie and earn 2steem hehe

However, maybe the 3

There are a lot of people with steem power that are helping people but when we get to 10s of millions of post a day we will a more self-sustaining site. And this will let the content that people want to be at the top make it to the top. Maybe a mix of the two can get us to the point we need to be.

This can't come sooner...
Because it's so frustrating for the most part. You make a good post, your voice remains unheard. I don't even go to the trending section anymore.

Is there any concrete news about the implementation date for HF20?
As long as I'm around I read about it, so probably it was announced almost a half or a full year ago?

I think that it might be very difficult to come up with a system that is fully working. So it might always be necessary to keep tweaking. But if those HF's continue to come with this speed, then I can easily predict future issues.

If they go for account bad voting, would that also mean account based financial rewards? I would say so, but it could also be seen as 2 separate items.

I love the idea of more democratic voting. It just makes sense and as more users onboard it will help minnows!

Good news to come I guess. We all hope for a better community where we can work and share our efforts, creativity and talents to the world, to ourselves... Hoping that community (steemit in general) to be a nice place, full of good content and fair system. Great post @whatageek, I'm always enjoy reading you. Greetings from Venezuela.
