This post is not about the steem coin itself. The success of the coin depends on different factors such as how many uses it has (different apps and sites) and how many people adopt it. This site is a focus on this site and I want to talk about it separate from the coin. Steemit is a social media/blogging site. I do feel we need more social aspects to make it a stronger social media site but it is pretty great as a blogging site with a community attached to it. But when it comes to being a social media network, there is one factor that is more important than others. And that is how many people are using it.
Numbers are what determine the success of sites like Steemit. Take Facebook for example, it is the main social media network because it has the users. It is what your friends and family use. This is the same as Youtube, Twitter and Google. These sites are the dominate sites because it is where the majority of users go in their respective fields. Yes they have grown to have better features than their competitors but those came over time and being a successful company, then had the money and resources to make it work.
Steemit has the advantage of being the first in its field. But I feel we need to get that user base in as soon as we can. This is, in no way, a message telling steemit they need to move faster, they are probably working their asses off. Just an opinion that soon, very soon, there needs to be a focus on bringing in the masses. I read before the idea of things being good enough and, for now, this might be the smart way to do things. Maybe even as soon as HF 19.
Yes, we need more features and a cleaner UI and other fixes. But once the onboarding process is ready and we can get people in quickly, I feel like we can worry about those features as we grow. We want a high number of users who are using the site, or will come back to check if those features are ready. Not hope we will have enough time and interest when the site is ready. I know this might sound a little backwards, but I think it is how tech works nowadays. People are used to betas. People understand things are not perfect at the start. But what you can't risk is losing attention to another site.
@ned @zurvanic @steemitblog if any of you see this, this is just a suggestion to think about making the user base the number 1 priority if it isn't already. And obviously if you got a better strategy ignore me completely :p
Go team steem.

First of all new users need to know what can expect here. Most of them expect quick money when they see the offered content.
-$40 for a flower. Wow!
Then follows the disappointment and departure.

Good post. Interesting thoughts as always. I am half and half. I wouldn't want users to come in and get frustrated and have a bunch of people going around saying steems a scam everywhere. On the other hand I have heard about a competing site or 2 but I heard about them before I even came to steemit.. I feel like steemit has it on lock. And with ChainBB, zapl, esteem. All these great projects that should help steemit get and keep all the new followers. But when you compare it to Facebook. You have to remember, that myspace got to market first. And Myspace is dead.

More users would be great, but there still seems to be a lot of issues signing people up. For example - my niece wanted to sign up this weekend. I walked her through the process and explained everything to her. She was excited to get started, even made her own blog site (which I had to help her set up, of course).
She still hasn't received her e-mail to get started on Steemit. It's been four days.
This is completely unacceptable. That is precisely how you lose potential users and will have a hell of a time getting them back. The younger crowds have little patience for technology that doesn't work. They want things and they want them now. And if the focus isn't on getting younger people to adopt this technology, then it'll be quickly sunk.
This sign-up issue needs to be fixed. Yesterday. How many more months does it need to go on?

Agreed, the sign-up process definitely goes under getting as many people as fast as we can. I mentioned we need to get onboarding set up so it gets people in quickly, that is unfortunate she has to wait so long.

I agree signing up process should be a breeze, in order to gain more members. I also understand that it cost them for each sign up registration, ideally what should be prioritized is quick sign up for real and verified users.

Email them on the confirmation email your niece got, and they will get back to you. That's what I had to do. Hope it helps

Yeah, that's probably what we'll end up doing tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

I agree.
I think we need a tool to classify/separate the posts by topics in a easier manner.

Definitely but content filtering is a whole other matter. A very important one that needs to be addressed soon as well.

I'm pretty sure they are purposely keeping the user base down. I applied for an account and never received a response. After waiting for more than two weeks I ended up buying an account instead (using Anon Steem).
Maybe it's because the product isn't out of beta and is not appealing enough, in features and such, for the masses. Steemit gets only one chance once people start funneling in. First impressions are everything.

There seems to be a lot of growing pains on STEEM. But I agree 100% with this post... things are not ripe for growth, either accidentally or on purpose. I would like to submit a bug list, talk to a #dev or generally try to improve the user interface.
Does anyone know of a direct interface for that? The system seems locked down tight with no one at the wheel ... just my impression. It must take a lot of time to gather up all the breadcrumbs. And I am technical guy to a tee.
Maybe I should look for a yellow brick road to Oz so I can find the wizard around here. I hear he has all the levers.
