The day I decided to take a break from SteemIt.

in steemit •  7 years ago

Once last winter I decided to take a break from SteemIt.  As I was letting SteemIt interrupt my sleep.  I decided I needed to take a break, and then re-engage when I was able to shake my frustration.   I took a really long break and wanted to share what that time was like for me.

Here is my diary entry from that day in January...

Diary Entries:

6:30 - Wake up and get my coffee going, short work-out prior to turning on computer.  Remind myself why I am taking a break from SteemIt.  How much free time I will have, how much more energy I can put into my own business and not worry about SteemIt.  Feel happy about the future.

7:00  - Make a breakfast smoothy and think about yesterday's post on SteemIt.  Out of habit, I begin to think about what I might post on SteemIt today.  Remind myself again, I am taking a break.  Feeling Optimistic.

7:30 am - Just a little peek to see what's new, a quick view of the home, new, hot, trending, promoted, and active tabs.  Oh, I saw a couple of posts I had to vote on and one which required a comment.  I will just check in on chat and listen to SteemSpeak for a few minutes, just to hear if anything exciting is going on.

8:00 am - Close my SteemIt, browser, open some real work and get busy.

8:30 am - Fight off my urge to look at SteemIt, but I checked the price.  No major changes, so, get back to work.

9:00 am - Attend a boring conference call for a work project and when the topic goes outside of my knowledge area. I end up looking at SteemIt.

10:00 am - Had a long conversation with a friend and end up bringing up SteemIt, and then I show him the platform quickly, with a warning of the beta, bots, politics, etc.  End up walking him through some of my posts, and some of my favorite posts, and help him sign up.

10:30 am - Okay re-commit to staying off SteemIt for the rest of the day.

12:00 pm - Okay, lunch time, make a sandwich, take the dogs for a walk, admire the beautiful snow.  Shoot, I only have a cell-phone camera, but I snatch a quick picture of the snow blowing across the field, and consider posting it on SteemIt.  Oops, yeah, I am taking a break.

12:30 pm - Fix the chicken water heater, and haul water and food out to the various animals and pens.  Consider several stories for SteemIt, once we have more diversity.  Remind myself I am taking a break.

1 pm - Sit back down at desk, just a quick glance.

2 pm - Oh, time to get off SteemIt and get back to work on this billable project I am fiddling with.

5 pm - My husband gets home, so I launch into a conversation about why I am taking some time off of SteemIt.  We discuss it briefly, ... for 2 hours.

7 pm - Eat dinner while considering why I never do any food posts on SteemIt.

8 pm - Clean kitchen and re-evaluate my SteemIt vacation.

9 pm - Check in on SteemIt, and "listen in" to SteemSpeak.

10 pm - Decide, I don't need a break from SteemIt.

11 pm - Officially break my hiatus from SteemIt.  Feeling Optimistic.

My name is @whatsup and I am addicted.

As long as no Steemit 12 Step Program intervenes, we can stop any time we want, all on our own.

Maybe tomorrow. Or the day after that.

Or the day after that...

I experience genuine guilt and FOMO when I see that I have had 100% voting power that has been wasting away, even if only for a few hours.

I get sick to my stomach when I think about how many upvotes I wasted during the 6+ months I was sitting at 100% voting power and wasn't participating.

Is this addiction? (yeah...I know it is.....)

Too much is always too much, doesn't matter if it is alcohol, smoking, video games, facebook or steemit. Thanks for sharing your experience @whatsup! There is so more in life than social media (im working with social media 8hours a day and 5 days a week.) so once a while, rain or shine, just log off and get out.

lol, what is "out"?

I am newly committed to getting on steemit as much as possible, Thank you for sharing this. I am going to look at steemit as an investment and as a job. I look forward to learning more each day, getting to know great people here and see my slow but sure consistent success.

Nice. A mentor of mine used to say "Don't get rich quick, get rich steady".

Consistent work always pays off in the end.

Even though im pretty new to Steem, i can definitely relate to not wanting to sit at 100% voting power too long. Its kinda like buying a pack of M&M's and only eating one

1 lays potato chip... 1 M&M, 1 SteemIt post. Is it enough?

hahahahahahahaha... you are a Steemit addict, i went through that my first two months, you here longer and still a struggle, I have thrown in the towel and then realized I am only fooling myself, dammnn thing to sweet to walk away from

My name is whatsup and I am an addict.

hahahahaha...good that you confess, check out my latest blog, the last paragraph is for you, your enthusiasm would be richly rewarded

@whatsup,
My wife asked me "WTH you are doing in-front the computer and commenting on non-senses (Her viewpoint)"
Then I decided to introduced her STEEMIT!
Now, she is addicted and we are rarely cooking at our kitchen :/

Shall I say we are addicted?

Nice post my dear friend! Thanks for sharing your experiences!

(My voting power is still regenerating, therefore please allow me three more days to provide 100% upvotes for your posts)

Cheers~

At least Steemit is worth it, unlike those other places 😂
I'm fulltime on Steemit, being a witness and blogging. I take long day breaks when my little nephews visit on weekends.

lol, I have to try hard to come up with different things to talk about when I am at family gatherings. Yes, I recently voted for your witness. :)

Thanks :)

STEEMANON

SteemIt instead of beer

I can't stop... Won't stop...

:::Diddy voice:::

I could hardly tell your voice from his.

Lol, that is a good break. Would have done a wonder of good ;0)

I have to admit that If I am at home and I have nothing to do I tend to check Steem more often. Same with coinmarketcap.

oh my, it is definitely addictive once there's a momentum. I just joined the community in August and started to form the habit of checking my account time to time. Still lacking the skill to produce great post.

When Steem goes to the moon, you can take some time off.😀

amigo #resteemia at your service

'you are not addicted to steemit' i think I said it wrong way. nice work @whatsup

'UpVote ReSteem Comment'

you just can't stop missing steemit :)

i had stop once but it attract itself i can't stop for long time.

Bahahahaha, youvare awesome! I love the honest timeline and the 2hour conversation with hubby. Are you on discord with the MSP pal network?

Steemit addiction has no known cure yet. So the only thing you can do is to stay with it. Short breaks seem possible, perhaps of a few minutes or even an hour or so. It also has this uncanny characteristic of sneaking into a user's subconscious thereby becoming a subject of many a dream.

Your long hiatus from Steemit in the form of such a long break as described in your post deserves an award!

Everyone comes back to steemit. It controles our lifes, the upvotes are what keeps us togheter :)

I agree with your experience. I feel like it's the same for a lot of the cryptocurrencies. They are so volatile and can rise a bunch and can drop a bunch. I need to control myself and let them rise rather than being anxious every five second.

@whatsup - Oh you are really a good follower of Steemit Sire. Actually, i think you addict to that. And here me too. :) Always thinking about Steemit. In fact, its happening automatically .. I think this would happened to all who are doing Steemit Sire.
Truly, this is an addiction. ;)

so basically to think about it
1 can't stay away from Steemit as soon as they start to like it .
Same goes for me

Upvoted. I'm going to resteem this now :]

That is exactly why I have never taken a break from Steemit... it is part of my life now and I am stuck here. Once you go steemit you don't go anywhere....

Steemit is dangerous. I keep going back to check my stats.

In the early days, I nearly broke my refresh button.

Lol. Metrics are addictive.

I feel like someone stole my post.

Haahaa!

This sounds strangely familiar.... Oh nooooo

one does not simply turns his back to steemit ;)

If Steemit was created before Facebook, i wonder how many people would actually use Facebook...the world will never know..

Its and addiction dude :)

Same thing happened to me with cocaine

LOL dude you make me laugh :)

Great writing is your daily entries. your very happy life.
It's an example to us too. thanks.

Perhaps I should do as you and consider taking a break too! I was out all day, so HAD to see what was going on when I finally got back home. It is now almost 2 AM and I'm still here reading stuff people have posted since I last looked early this morning... oops... now YESTERDAY morning! Ughhh... I'm obviously addicted too!

steemit is taking most of my time. almost 12 hours daily or even more

I simply can call it time eater but money maker

it's really hard for me to break because it makes time passes unless you feel

You could get away from SteemIt if you have something more valuable to do. Something you are passionate about. Otherwise it is almost impossible. You are just making it worth.

You could restrict the use of SteemIt by limiting the time you spent here and having some tasks that you should do during the use of it.

Like:

  • make 2 posts
  • publish the first post and schedule the second for tomorrow
  • read main topics of your favorite writers
  • comment on 10 of them or how many you need to

I feel strangely drawn to this story. Steemit is a drug. Instant gratification paired with money and social feedback = Mind explosion.

Steemit is a great platform and its really addictive :)

10 pm - Decide, I don't need a break from SteemIt. Well.. : )

Hahahah oh man! I was like that for a while, and then inadvertently took a break from steemit due to many visitors and events happening throughout august. I was posing daily... but now, it's a real challenge to get back into the habit.

We discuss it briefly, ... for 2 hours.

HHAHAH cracked me up!

I hope you do post more about your animals, now that I am following you. Haha. You have a new stalker...
