Welcome to SteemIt - Managing your expectations

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

When the price goes up we get new users.  New-Users here are often referred to as Minnows, some find it demeaning, I think it is cute.

Welcome New-Users!  (Minnows)It is great to see so many new-users signing up and checking out SteemIt.  It can be a tough learning curve if you are new to the Blockchain and Crypto.     As your Steem Power grows your voting power grows, your curation rewards grow, your following tends to grow.  Like any new job or industry you will learn some tricks and your skills get better.  Add to the that the potential for the price of Steem to grow, and the time you spend on SteemIt, could be well worth it.  As with all investments there are no guarantees.  There are some who push the best case studies, or "Get Rich Quick" ideas about the platform,  (it is possible, but not the typical results) but I am not excited about having a bunch of frustrated users, who are thinking they are doing something wrong because they haven't hit the Jack Pot on their fourth post.   I subscribe to the "promise less, deliver more" ideal.

Let's Talk About Some Financial Expectations:

(Everything thing I write here is based on my perspective and not meant to be seen as an official guide)

  1. You will likely not trend or earn a lot right away, it takes time to build a following.
  2. Like anywhere else that you join or work your influence builds over time.
  3. There are voting bots and not all votes are equal.  Votes are weighted with the Steem Power the account holds (At least for now) So, accounts that have been established and that hold a lot of Steem Power are the votes you want if your goal is earning.
  4. Flags and down-votes happen.  When someone flags or down-votes your post it can reduce or remove the value of the votes you have received, changing the potential payout of your post.  Don't "bank" on having those rewards until the pay-out has occurred.
  5. You will see posts calling out other users, criticizing the site, making allegations, I got caught up in this when I was new and it wasn't helpful.  My suggestion is to make sure you understand the site and the users a bit, before you get sucked into the rabbit hole of "It isn't fair or so and so is cheating".
  6. Just have fun, post about what you know or are interested in.  Post some questions, find some challenges, make comments. More on this in my next minnow post.
  7. If you quit your job to work on SteemIt, make sure you can afford to make that decision, the site is in beta and still under development.  Market conditions, the site, the reward pool and many other things are subject to change without warning.
  8. Make some friends!  Networking is a part of this game.

A while ago I made a new twitter account and despite making witty comments I rarely got a like or retweet.  They don't even deal with  money and you are still expected to build your own audience.  Earning here is possible, but not guaranteed.  While I agree there is too much money swapping between whales -complaining, threatening to quit, likely will not change that.  Oh and some people here aren't very nice.  That is the price you pay for an immutable blockchain.

Don't drink and Steem.  ;)  (kidding, err mostly) Best of luck (plus some patience and effort) there is no guarantee of success - like anything else, keep trying and you will get better at it and also learn some of the finer points of success.  Welcome and enjoy remember you are among those savvy enough to recognize this is a sexy, cutting edge experiment, rough around the edges, but really cool for those who can handle it.

I wish I read this when I started , I literally knew nothing . Just watched a YouTube video of someone who was a whale and always wished to get up there . Man , 6 months later and it has been a rollercoaster ride but I am glad to be part of a paltform Of which Ive met the greatest people ever and learned so much

You have mentioned some of the vital points for minnows and newcomers and they should read this article...

very nice and informative.

Thank you and Have a great day.

Great article Whatsup! Ive included it in me new magazine. Enjoys! https://steemit.com/news/@jacobts/jts-steemit-magazine-1

The vast knowledge. The impeccable sense of positivity. The straight calling out the BS of privilege and ungratefulness. How did I get so lucky to have a friend in you I wonder! I am so excited to share this with my followers, they will enjoy the glimmer of hope that is laid out here!

I love being your pet minnow & I could not be more proud of your hard work and dedication. The more Ya know!

I have not been having any luck catching your posts right after you post them these days. I agree that one has to manage their expectations when dealing with this site. A lot of minnows ask me...... how can I get the attention of a whale? They don't understand that the site should be about building your own brand...... and interacting with and following other people. The way to attract a whale is the same way you attract a potential mate.... be attractive. Be fun. Be interactive. Be engaging. Be cool.

"Why won't you go out with me?" has never gotten anyone any attention from a potential mate. Or from a whale or from anyone ever.

I love this answer!!!

I'm not a whale and I'm not close to it, but if I had to give someone new advice here, it would be a quote from Stve Jobs that I use practically as a motto.

"I'm convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance."

Excellent addition.

You will see posts calling out other users, criticizing the site, making allegations, I got caught up in this when I was new and it wasn't helpful. My suggestion is to make sure you understand the site and the users a bit, before you get sucked into the rabbit hole of "It isn't fair or so and so is cheating".

Amen. I've noticed quite a few new users getting sucked into that drama, which is really sad to see because they haven't had much time to get to know the platform before they already decided to take sides. One of the things that attracted me to Steemit was seeing the writers who exuded an attitude of abundance. That completely opened my eyes to the potential of crypto, and I am a better person for it. Having negativity and scarcity be the first influence for minnows bums me out because it brings over the dominant values of other platforms.

I hear you. However, if we get discovered and big money comes into crypto, none of that will matter. Build a stake and a following and enjoy your own ability to view the abundance!

That's true, and that's what I've decided to focus my energies on. I truly believe the long game is in all of our favor. :) Thank you for your guidance.

It can take a while to make much, so make it fun

I love your Santa Avatar! :)

That's thanks to @skyleap. I love this community

Very good advice. If I were joining knowing what I know now, my intro post would have been later and different. Having said that, I was conscripted in to the #steemwars, and immediately into #teamaustralia, which gave a pretty handy start to things, but while it gave me things to post about regularly, it didn't help me with thinking about what I was going to be posting as a normal regular thing.

That just took time, and understanding what I want to write about.

What I would say though is that even with the bold, you undersell point 9. Networking is not just a part of this game. If you network well, you will not just gain followers, you'll gain friends, and you'll gain friends that will regularly vote on your posts. Or friends that will resteem your posts, or both. Better networks will get you better coverage, more views, and more upvotes, and more rewards.

Regardless of what you do with the rewards, at least some of it will build up your steem power, which will build up your rewards and the cycle will continue. I didn't set goals or times that I hoped to make certain levels, but I was sure happy when I passed 250SP, and then 500SP which took less time to get to, and I suspect that 1kSP will be my next level I notice.

The things I do try really hard to do though, is post once a day, and read and reply to comments on my posts. Depending on my voting power, upvote them too.

its just amazing to be here honestly earning is another thing and may differ but having fun and getting rewarded is a great thing

It's now in decline and this is down to a bitcoin that ruined the market
To rise again it takes a lot of time
What do you think bro

I think it is amazing the Bitcoin price fell that hard and we remained at or near $3. I don't give trading advice, but I feel very excited about how the price performed during that mess. :)

Yes this is excellent
This chaos has left huge losses for me, most traders
Hatta I lost a lot because of her
This saddened me

That's a great post! I think it is important to let new users know that they need to be consistent with their blogging and Steemit is not a 'get rich quick' platform (usually). People get frustrated if they are promised too much and it is most likely not going to happen over night.

I started Steemit few months ago and wish I could have started earlier, but I guess we are never too late to start. In this world once you started something, your have to trust and believe it , most importantly you have to work hard and never loses faith on it. There will be times that you fell nothing is happening but you should keep going no matter what happens and you should be ready to expect any result too.
Same applied to Steemit.

Thank you @ whatsup for encouraging the newcomers and giving your honest advice to them. That's how we have to build our community, we have to build confident among the newbies so that they will continue without stopping.

Cheers!
Cheers!

hehe that's very true couldn't deny that its like building something from the scratch over the time :)
slowly and steadily you gotta make what you wanna see nothing happens overnight

Hi! What’s your advice to build a following?

Comment meaningful comments, engage with users, join a community like Steamspeak or Pal where you can network with others.

Use excellent photos and maybe try to shock people without offending once in a while. Mostly it is a name recognition game the more people who know your name and recognize your avatar the better.

I've never really put out the extra high end content and my results show it. I try to treat it like social media. Mostly it is Networking!

I will take that advice.

Excellent work and you are right, success will come to us, but only through patience and work! At first glance, in our ecosystem everything is simple and it is so, if you know what and how, and if you do not know, watch and learn! Thank you @whatsup

Definitely a great post to have out there. Having lost interest with so many other social media platforms Steem has given me a fantastic creative and social outlet that no other platform truly offers. Like a lot of new users I was first drawn in by the financial side of things but totally underestimated the community driven side to it. I never expected that within a few days of posting about my experience on a UK gameshow, I'd connect with someone who trains for the same gameshow in the US. Or the several users who's feeds I genuinely miss if I don't go on the site for a day, or the users who pop up on the 'new' feed who's work is incredible, or who's story is just mesmerising.

The fact that we can combine that with actually getting rewarded for where we spend our time online is fantastic. Every day the standard of posts seems to rise!

Thanks a lot for your great blog dear @whatsup.... and also I'm 100% agreed with the statement of @tabealouise :
''That's a great post! I think it is important to let new users know that they need to be consistent with their blogging and Steemit is not a 'get rich quick' platform.''
I am also a new comer at steemit. And I have learned lot of things here from all of the seniors. And I am happy that I have started my career. Thanks to all.

After reading this article I must say, every minnow should this article not just once but twice thrice and even five times which can really give direction to their journey in steemit and they can really understand what they are upto in this platform.

thank you ....steem on and stay blissful.

What you say....Ya. all true, but ehhhh....the frustration of writing quality posts as a minnow and not even getting a vote!!1 But anyways, you are right. Patience, perseverance...It should finally pay off. Thanks

I went through the same thing, and I didn't say it wasn't going to be frustrating.

lol - Once you have been here 6 months or so and you have an audience you can "re-cycle" some of your posts, just be sure to mention that is what you are doing.

That should do. So whether or not i am read now, doesn't matter, as it will still have the chance to pay off later. Thanks. I will just focus on quality and build a following.

its a hard journey but i am loving every bit of it the more you go ahead the better it gets

Hi dear @whatsup, I must say that this blog post should be posted when I joined steemit back in July, 2017. You gave us great thoughts on this awesome community. Everytime you share something beyond my thinking. Let me share my personal story in very short way:
Back in 2011 I started my career as freelancers as Marketer. I earned some money for almost 6-7 years. July, 2017 I accidentally joined steemit and started working on it. After 3 months in November, 2017 I seriously involved in steemit and then I left everything and fully concentrate on steemit. This is a great platform which pays everyone by even, up-voting, commenting and posting.
I'm not a minnow now but still I have to do hard work to be successful. We believe on it and we will take steemit in next level in 2018. All the best for sharing such a wonderful blog post dear @whatsup. Stay Blessed!

i am really enjoying steemit even when price goes lower because life is full of ups and downs !

taking it just as an alternative way of social media no expectations no hurt feeling : )

Great post (as always) @whatsup, Very valuable advice you have given for our newbie steemians!

Yes, It really takes persistence, determination, never give-up attitude to progress on steemit. 😊💚💙

Thanks for sharing this post.

Have a glorious day!!💜

Hi. I'm new here, check out my profile. I'm actually a Bitcoin early adopter, just not one of the lucky ones - https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@yumoto353/the-only-thing-i-have-left-as-a-bitcoin-early-adopter

Thanks for sharing the participant

It's great that your words are finding willing ears and let me say to you it's just the beginning. Keep up your motivational series, people need that.

it surely takes a lot of time first up as its a marathon to start with but you got to do a sprint first it real life :)

its a subject to market risk i will not take that risk for sure

I only properly started a good 16 days ago or so and I got a quick dose of reality very fast.
Just got out of bandwidth jail right now heck!
I love the ride and I hope to have all the people I know communicating on steemit because this is awesome.
Thanks for your help as well you've got a follower in me :D

steemit is cool with people like you ;)

its a fun journey it takes time but definitely worth the time

the influence works only for those who have the courage to do something differently

All well said @whatsup!

The early period of every minnow is a but tough and if one is determined and dedicated and have vision then this is not only rewarding for him or her but also a very long successful journey it will have.

Thank you so much @whatsup for this very nice article.

wonderful post..thanks for sharing..

Yes, exactly. It depends on what the steem interests or reading

This would have been great for me to read when I first started on here it was a rough learning curve

Keep up the good work supporting Steem and the community

its just for fun nothing else can't even earn a sbd sometime just here to make new friends

That is for sure a very honest and great post.
About the swapping money, yep it is true, and with a few users often confusing due to the low quality of content, but they have invested a huge amount of time to build up a following base. I find in general comparing very poisoning, it doesn’t help in any case. In every industry there are such cases, lets just have a fast glance in the music business, we all know that some of the best musicians don’t get chances, but tones of really stupid music is playing on the radio making mostly producers rich. I think steemit has a lot to offer.
People without patience will always get annoyed fast.
I am for sure here to stay and have been convincing friends with interesting visual art & writing quality to join.

I'm new here and I can experience exactly what you are talking about I wrote a post today about this subject to explain myself and help other minnows who are seeking help, thank you for this article.
