Well, Now I Feel Foolish

in steemit •  8 years ago

Hi,
I am a complete beginner in this world of Bits and Chains and Blocks.[I am not that interested in all these bits ]
I stumbled upon Steem by complete accident.
I liked the idea of open non-centralized unowned [owned by everybody] systems.
I love the idea of self governing systems without the need for intermediaries who accrue power over the service users through hiding information and using it in a secret manner to exploit the service users.
I love the idea that this post that I now write will remain for ever and everyone can use this post against me sometime in the future....;-)
Any thing that offers the populous a chance to organize itself through a self-regulating and impossible-to-rig system gets my respect. And my understanding is that the Blockchain the BitCoings etc offers just that. And that Steem was using these technologies to create new social networking?
So with some anticipation I started exploring Steem.
My second exploration brought me to this post.
But the attitudes from the post below cause me to be a little confused.
As I do not understand anything of the technicalities discussed I can only capture the flavor or smell of the posts made, and it feels like unclear, slightly discouraged and about money; as well as not taking personal responsibility.
All because of one person leaving??

So as a beginner do I need to understand that this platform is actually about money, investments or about creating an alternative social network platform?
Cheers

You joined at a very interesting time. :)

The person who left was a co-founder who built much of what we're using. He was also a philosopher with a great vision to improve the world (see past posts by @dan and @dantheman). At the same time, he was controversial.

Steemit is ultimately what you make of it. It's yours to do with as you wish. You can choose who to follow and what to contribute. Here's a post I wrote 8 months ago which might be helpful. As for money, I wrote quite a bit on that also. Steemit is about money, investments, and an alternative social network. It's about even more than that too as a mechanism for future agorism, non-violent governance, and more.

Welcome to a GREAT social community and have FUN!
