I would like to introduce myself as a new player in the world of cryptocurrency, I don't have a big understanding of it; I have discovered SteemIt and did nothing but immediately sign up. I have only been on here for less than an hour and I'm already in love with it, all the posts I see here have truly caught my eye as original and unique. I shall be attempting to grasp the true concept of SteemIt, but it looks VERY promising. How do the dollar amounts next to the upvote button work? I upvote the great content in 'trending' anyways, but could someone explain it to me? Thanks!

Welcome to steemit. The dollar amounts are your share of the daily STEEM value created by the system (every day a certain amount of steem is generated and released to content creators). The amount that you get is decided by the votes that you get on your post. Not just the number of votes, but also the weight of those votes. People that hold more steem in the form of "Steem Power" have a higher vote weight and thus attribute you a greater share of the days currency. People with less steem power attribute you less. There are some very large holders (like the founders dan and ned) that have a vote that is worth whole dollars because they have larger stakes in steem (they are the ceo's after all).

Nice honest intro.
Honesty is valued highly on Steemit and if you keep on with that then you will do well on here.
" I upvote the great content in 'trending' anyways, " - Upvote great content yes, but remember you have limited voting power and so use your vote wisely.
Be yourself and vote on posts that particularly interest you not just because they are Trending or Hot. This is what Steemit is all about. Here you are rewarded for being yourself. Fakes and scammers dont last long on Steemit because of its unique reputation system.
You will soon get the hang of it.
