The Ghana Red Cross Society in the Western Region and its youth wing on Saturday 8th July made a strong case to support the government’s efforts aimed at ending illegal mining as messages on the need to end the canker was conveyed on placards displayed during its Annual Health walk in Takoradi.
Under the theme: “Stop Illegal Mining: Save our Waters, Save our Lands, Save our Future” the participants numbering over 1,000 took to the streets of Takoradi with placards carrying inscriptions like “Stop illegal Mining” “Lets save our environment for the future”, “Safe Environment; we all have a role”, “The Future belongs to us, so save the water bodies”, “Illegal Mining is dangerous to us”, “Save the environment today” and host of others.
The over 4-hour walk saw participants, who were mostly students and Red Cross volunteers in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, Shama and Ahanta West Districts, walked through the principal streets of Takoradi.
Addressing the participants, the Regional Manager of the Ghana Red Cross Society Mr. Matthew Boateng, said the walk was to communicate the r esolve of the regional youth wing of the Red Cross Society to join the efforts by the government, the media and civil society groups to end the illegal mining menace in Ghana.
He commended the government for the journey so far in tackling the illegal mining but called for other organized bodies as well as individuals to join hands saying that we cannot afford to lose this battle as a nation.
“The theme: Stop Illegal Mining: Save our Waters, Save our Lands, Save our Future was chosen to show how the youth are going to be affected severely few years to come, if the current levels of devastations caused to the environment was not halted.
He said it was worthy to note that s ome positive signs have become visible to all as once dirty water bodies were beginning to become clean.
He therefore called all and sundry to join the fight against this future-threatening activity and promised that the Red Cross in the Western Region will continue to support all government efforts in ensuring the illegal mining was over.
