You can only hope to be prepared until you hit that wall haha

During previous Beast race we had a massive wall at the top of 350m hill. I ran with Elite heat and for males (females have an extra step for support on their side) the failure right there was about 70-80%. The surface was so slippery it was almost very difficult to catch a grip and bounce up for anyone who was less than 1.80m tall. We just had to burp. I tried once and just went straight to burpees. Tactically, there was no point for me to waste energy and time on other attempts. I recommend you to start practising burpees. They are sometimes better than do some obstacles to save time and energy. Aim for minimum 80 in under 5 mins. It is not difficult if you do not rush the tempo. You can easily do 100 in under 5 mins. With high speed it is possible to do 80 in under 4 mins but you are just exhausted, good for anaerobic practise though. Also aim for running 1.5 mile in under 10 mins. These are requirements for elite. I bet it is nothing for you. It took me a while to get under 10 mins but I never really practiced running regularly before I started racing.

Expect to see some annoying muppets clogging obstacles or taking a piss and cheating in heats other than Elite or Competitive. For example they skip burpee penalties (or do them incorrectly) or try to avoid some obstacles.

Ahhh I can't stand when people cheat, especially when no one is watching! It is supposed to be about personal best. I used to do burpies as part of my routine but yeah I am out of shape right now but it is also Summer here in NY so its a good time to get back to my "fighting weight". The 10 minute 1.5 mile is doable I think. In College I ran the 5 mile and did it in around 28 minutes and in high school I was able to do a XC 5K in 17:27 I think was my PB, all sub 18 Senior year. Then again that was a while ago but I can definitely dig deep and will it out of myself mentally especially if I start getting my max VO2 up physically. Just have to spend more time on the road bike and hit the trails running more. The triathlon I am training for now is at the end of August so I am in the beginning of "training mode". Man I still can't believe people cheat at the Spartan. That is so...idk, against like the entire point of the race. I could never do that. It would make my final time/place mean nothing and in my heart I would know that I signed up for a competition and then cheated which I would NEVER do. In my eyes if you can't do an obstacle you take your lumps and prepare better for next time. The penalty is to keep things fair I really can't believe people cheat like that. So messed up. Someone should set up some cameras and put the cheaters on YouTube with the Game of Thrones "shame, shame, shame" in the background hahaha. But yeah I guess I need to get myself some new running sneakers now. I already almost wore out my Asics and its not even July yet. One question. Do these races typically involve more road running or trail running or a mix of both or does it really depend on the location? And I know you said you prefer Reebok for kicks but whats the best style to get you think? I usually just wear like Asics 2000 series trail shoes, since they get destroyed in the mud, or Asics Triathlon type sneakers (Gel Noosa Triathlon 9's) since they seem to fit my feet exactly right. They have these bungie type laces that are so convenient so I don't have to mess with laces coming undone and it saves me time in the bike to run transfer. Man...I am getting my heart pumping hard just thinking about this upcoming race. I will do some short 5K and 10K road races to prepare beforehand and a Run-Bike which is really run. They have a team Triathlon that I do with my Mom every year. I swim, she bikes, I run. Most teams are three people but I like it better this way. Plus we always win 😎

I agree. They just cheat themselves.

Elite runners do not cheat (scored whole trifecta and run in elite wave). At least I have not seen. They also disqualified if they cannot pass some obstacles.
There is always some volunteer watching by each obstacle but in some locations volunteers are not strict in penalising or just do not care much, like during last one I ran. In the one before, they watched and where well trained in penalising. But there are still some parts of the trail without obstacles where there is no-one watching so they can cheat running shortcut, or omitting water or hill which I have seen few times.

The trail varies according to location but it is seldom asphalt road. Mostly park or countryside trails. The Beast I ran a month ago was hell. It was mostly sky running trails with steep few hundred metre long approaches. You do not run then, just slowly push walking up.

I have not tried other trail trainers by other companies. Only Reebok. I have some normal running Asics shoes which are decent.
For SRace I have used some old Reebok trainers designed for this competition. The cheapest model that was in series with normal laces (but I bought those plastic, sliding ones you mentioned from ebay and replaced). They have decent grip in front and I ran 5 Spartan Races in them and will run 6th soon. I just carefully hand rinse them after each race (takes a while) so they are more less clean, then dry.

Some people throw away shoes after 1-3 races.

When preparing I use different Reebok model, I got few months ago. Decent front grip for traversing and climbing walls, and lighter than the other model I have got.

Reebok usually makes 3 new models each year for SR with different prices, grip, weight and shape.

There are also other popular mud runs around if you want to try. I need to try myself too.
