HF 19, The Silver Lining new users should know about.

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

As I scroll through the "New Posts" Section of steemit, I noticed a pattern that seems quite concerning. What is this pattern? Many posts with little or no votes. Why is this happening? Because, like I said in my first paragraph here, the awesome rewards that we are seeing after HF 19 is, well awesome, but also a silver lining in a dark cloud for many.

Oh sure, the popular Ducks and Ducklings that were here before will still have their bread buttered through having experience and a strong following, however, the average new user, will not. Why is this? Two reasons, there is an assload of new users to create enough fluff content to obscure any rising potential and two, new users, who probably make up the bulk of the platform in numbers right now, have fewer votes to toss than we did before HF19.

So while HF 19 did a great job at rewarding users for their work and attracting new people to the platform, it also created a lot of white noise on the platform, making it harder to browse, interact and make connections. This is made even more difficult by the fact that, well, new users are noobs, they don't know anything about the platform, how it works and the culture here.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe that some benevolent whale or dolphin SHOULD be charitably tossing votes around the new posts pages so noobs can have votes on their stuff and feel happy. Not at all. I'm just observing the stark difference in voting habits, posting habits and rate of posting. The "New posts" Section simply cannot handle it and as a result, many new posts from authors with small followings get even less of a chance to be noticed than before.

This isn't a problem so much as it is an opportunity for expansion. Maybe the devs didn't think the site would be such a big hit, or maybe they have something up their sleeves to deal with all of this. However, steemit is now tougher for new users in two ways and I hope the noobs can recognize this and adapt.

How can they adapt?

Well, interaction and proper promotion, like the experienced users are always parroting. Though I admit, when you first join a site, expecting to rake in some serious cash by just writing a few words and posting a couple cat pics, only to be hit with a situation that needs to be strategized carefully, your motivation can take a hit. I hope this does not happen to new users here. I believe Steemit needs a larger user base to grow more so something needs to be done about this current situation.

For now, I'm trying to grab as many noobs as I can by the collar and put them on a ledge a little bit removed from drowning in confusion and I know many other steemians are too :) Let's show the noobs that we are a community and we are here to support each other. There are many Support Groups trying to assist new users and doing an awesome job at it, though I think they can be overstressed too since they have limited number of votes to toss around as well.

To new users, slow down and give the site a chance before you start spam begging for votes, we understand your position, however, the solution for you is not a randomly gifted vote. We want the site to grow and you along with it so we ALL can benefit more value from it.

Have a little patience and READ,READ,READ!!! One thing I can say about steemit is that the Devs really ARE dedicated to making this a success for us all and they are working hard at it! So don't give up and don't be afraid to ask questions, we are here for you!

That is hard the part money. A lot of people are showing up for easy money and it just doesn't work (normally). I wish more new users would really look in to SteemIt and research that posting 209 comments to others saying follow me I'll follow you honestly doesn't get you that far here. If more take would take there time we gradually see more successes.

Indeed xD I wonder if its just lack of experience, or just plain botting sometimes.

You know I'm not sure! A combination of all of it I'm sure. It just drives me nuts when I see someone post the same comment 100 times on different content. Makes it so obvious you didn't actual read a thing, or watch the video content. Just a quick way to get followers, even though those followers aren't likily to help you at all!

Yeah lol, follow for follow is logically flawed. I'm hoping to help some of them stay around long enough to learn. when I first joined, none of this made any sense either.

Great point! I joined Steemit the day before the hardfork and it really helped my posts but I do wonder how people who joined after it may have been affected. I was so grateful to those who reached out and welcomed me, so I definitely plan on continuing to pay it forward to other new users. Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you decided to go that way. It was pretty rough for me when I joined 3 months ago too, just like you, right before HF 18. This one isn't too bad lol

I can only imagine. Thanks again for sharing your journey!

That is all absolutely true. I'm just over a week old here! I felt like my intro post was a hit! Anything else after, kind of, but not really. I have a post recently talking about my experience after 7 days and I'm surprised it didn't gain more traction.

I'm trying not to become obsessed with what a post could make (but that's REALLY HARD!!), because to be completely honest, I'm still pretty stoked if I only make $0.73! That's $0.73 more than I had before!

Indeed, and I enjoyed that type of payment for weeks before hardfork, now I post and sometimes, I cant even get a good vote xD I think I preferred seeing 12 votes paying 2 cents than no votes at all , lol

Yeah, I'm still trying to find out how to effectively upvote. Since I don't have enough SP, I don't have the slider yet. I think you have to have nearly 500 SP in order to get the vote percentage slider.
When I was brand new I was upvoting all the things! And now, I'm scared to??? I don't want to run out! I feel like a hoarder!

LOL! you are absolutely correct, My best advice to you is to use this time to enter contests and socialize, make friends, find groups you are interested in. Become a part of the community, don't worry about votes so much. spend time making connections and learning.

That's what I do! So far found some real awesome people!! :)

There are so many xD I'm loving the steaders groups too! your guys are so interesting. Just don;t have the freedom, space and security in my country to live like that. I'm working towards it though, Steem to the moon, maybe!!??

Where do you live?? You see, homesteading isn't just for the country. :)

I live in Trinidad, a small country xD I'm in the process of trying to figure it out for my own home here, there isn't a huge culture of homesteading here so it's kind of new to me.

It's like anything in life. Energy flows where attention goes. So if you want returns, you gotta work it baby.

Oh! I just made my very first post and am quite confused about how this all works. I'm thinking reading more is great advice!

It is, thanks for reading more :D

Thanks. This is great advice. I've spent hours today reading posts and figuring out how the voting and commenting all works together. What you said is true. Be patient, work hard, be sincere, and things will take care of themselves. Thanks for the time you put into writing this post.
Cheers.
