Training with smelly guys & gals

There’s nothing worse than a smelly person, at least for me personally. I always find it so sad to see a good looking guy or girl, and have a stench of onion & vinegar stab my nose as they approach. It’s a total turn off, and let's be real: nowadays if someone smells bad, it’s simply because they don’t shower enough, don’t use deodorant, or because they don’t wash their clothes when they’re dirty.

Unfortunately, when you train BJJ you are bound to smell, there’s no way around it. But there’s a huge difference between smelling bad because you’ve worked out hard, and coming to the gym already smelling like budissy.

Why am I bringing this up?

Yesterday, at our gym we had a bit of an awkward incident. Luckily, I arrived late to open mat so I missed the action, but when I got there, one of the guys who recently joined our team was already sitting on the bench. He’s a white belt and not very fit, so I simply assumed that he was taking a break. He didn’t respond when I said hello, but I didn’t think much of it. Sometimes ego gets people in a bad mood. I went about my rolling session (or the "kick Eve’s butt" session, because essentially I just go to get my butt kicked!) with my regular training partners.

When we finished, new guy had already left and so the topic came up. One of my friends had gotten pissed at him during a roll, and told him that he smelled so bad he couldn’t take it anymore. I know my friend well, and he has a short fuse for these type of things. I imagine that he wasn't very gentle with his words. That was also because it wasn’t the first time the guys had complained about his odor.

I had never rolled with that particular dude myself (I avoid the heavy newcomers because of my back problem) but I get where he’s coming from. I only once refused to roll with a guy whose body odor almost made me vomit, and it was a shame because the guy was very nice and I felt like an asshole for not sparring with him. The thing is, most people who chronically smell bad don’t even realize it. It must be out of habit, which makes it even more difficult to tell someone that they reek.

Should you be straight forward about it?

Was it wrong to tell the guy to shower before training? I don’t think so, as long as it’s being said with respect. But I also believe that coming to a gym dirty is a lack of respect towards your sparring partners. There are some positions like north-south (see pic below), you definitely don’t want to be caught in with a smelly person. I've tapped out because of bad smell before, no joke.

It’s not only about making your sparring partners uncomfortable. Hygiene is extremely important in general for our health, and there is nothing dirtier than a tatami that has twenty different people’s sweat on it. Staph infections are no joke and gyms are a breeding ground for staph infections. Therefore, showering is the first thing you should do after you train, or else you're just asking for it!

Training with a dirty gi

I’m going to be honest, I sometimes can’t take my own smell after training. My husband and I joke in the car sometimes about who smells worse, and drive home with the windows open. When we get home, we have a rule: the kimonos cannot enter the bathroom (where we keep our dirty laundry) because the entire room would stink. So we leave them next to the washing machine downstairs to be washed immediately. There’s nothing more disgusting than a wet, sweaty rash guard or kimono, and it blows my mind when I see people come train with a kimono that is still dirty from the previous training.

Once again, it’s not only very disrespectful to everyone else who has to suffer the smell, but it’s simply extremely unhygienic and a staph risk. Coming to training with a clean gi should be common courtesy in any academy.

Have you had any experiences with smelly people on the mats or in your gym?

Ow shit...poor stinky guy. We also have one guy in the gym and his breath smells soooo bad. Dunno, I've never told him and not sure if I should. Anyway, I don't have to think about it as I'm not training again :///

Why?Well, I'm not sure but seems I got a tiny wart on my feet. Must for sure be from the gym as I've been training one month since the knee healed and didn't visit any other gym or swimming pool in the meantime. So yeah, means someone has a wart there and comes anyways and spreads that shit :/ But I'm not one of those people so I'll treat it on the sidelines. My BJJ whitebelt journey has soooo many problems :/ Broken hand from bike fall (6 months out), fucked up knee from skiing (3 months out) + now this wart :/ (@zekepickleman tagging you just so you know :D)

Btw I didn't know Eve that your hubby trains as well...soo cool. And btw, why don't you take a shower in the gym? That way you don't have to drive with open window all the time haha :D

I like the new footer and snapback pic!!!

oh no I'm sorry to hear that you have so many injuries that stop you from training! My husband has a cracked rib and is also out for several weeks (and probably at least 3 more). It sucks and can be demotivating, but come back afterwards, don't stop =).

Oh warts are awful!!! Do you guys disinfect your mats after every training? We bleach them each time, just to be sure...

I don't shower at my gym because there's only one shower and it's basically our storage room for cleaning products lol. I also don't like sharing a shower with other people unless I really have to. I don't live far away, so I can survive the 10 smelly minutes in the car ahaha

Yepp yepp, we do it everyday after the training....I quite often actually volunteer for that. Might be that I was half-assing it and karma kicked me back hahah :D

Oh...regarding shower sharing...we also have just one.

Hmmm, I actually even enjoy it if I share it with a girl and at the same time hahah (but that doesn't happen in gym of course...those were just my dirty thoughts as I was writing the comment :D)

LOL

I have been relatively lucky with one blown shoulder that was really just an old hockey injury coming back to haunt me.

My daughter and I both train and have foot warts too. Small price to pay.

I guess I have been lucky in my years and nobody has really smelled that bad. It is possible that I don't have a great sense of smell for that sort of thing or people really are just doing a good job with laundry and hygiene. I do like you and the first stop I make at home is to bring the GI into the laundry room. There is no drying it out an reusing it without washing it as I would kill a partner.

What I find funny is the familiar smell of the detergent on many different people. That or when someone smells of weed as I never have done that before class.

ahahahah yes I'm familiar with the weed smell ahahah. I've never done it either

Haha I love how you are not afraid to come up with these "taboo topics" Eve :D I believe a martial art gym must be a very stinky place but have you ever been to a football locker room after the match? :D

Hmm I havent and I believe it's actually stinkier there. Cuz those guys wear their soccer shoes day in and day out and their feet for sure stink as hell :D But regarding hygiene and infections spreading, martial arts gyms are probably worse since people touch each other much more. Just happened to me last week :/

LOL no I haven't but I can only imagine =) I don't mind an overall"gym stink". After a few minutes you don't really smell it anymore, but if you just walk in, it's like a stink bomb explodes in your face lol

That must be the worst ... we had a new client at work that used to come to the office to discuss the contracts until we finalized everything......He was a foreigner that didn’t use deodorant......It was so bad, I had to open all the windows and make sure not to use the conference table ..... so he would have to sit across from me rather than next to me.

yup ahahah been in situations like that =/ it's awful
