Coffee - A Lifelong Love Affair

in steemitbloggers •  6 years ago  (edited)

"If coffee be the elixir of the gods, then we mortals must drink, and drink deeply" - Made Up Quote (still a good one).

This made up coffee quote personifies the life-long love affair I have enjoyed with coffee. It is an integral part of who I am and I love having it in my life. I can remember my father drinking coffee all day every day and it is probably from him that I developed my affinity for this fine roasted brew. He would literally drink 4-5 pots a day and he would drink a cup just before going to bed and sleep like a baby. It didn't matter if it was the dead of winter or the height of summer, my father inhaled the stuff as his drug of choice. He preferred regular old coffee with sugar and cream. I started drinking it as he does, but quickly outgrew his tastes and developed my own.

Learning to Love Coffee

I don't remember the first time I tried coffee, but knowing my parents it was probably about the time I was learning to walk, because I do remember drinking sweet tea from a bottle. I began drinking it on an almost daily basis in the last part of my middle school years. As I said above, I followed in my father's footsteps when it came to coffee preparation but quickly developed a taste for darker and stronger brews than he would attempt. I drank it black for many years (my attempt at being a tough guy I guess) but returned to my roots of taking it with cream and sugar.

I quickly graduated to blended coffees such as lattes and breves and I continue to enjoy them almost as a dessert later in the day. Most days are started with a strong cup and I usually have 5-6 more throughout the day.

I love everything about this mystical drink and I enjoy just about any variety originating from every corner of the earth. I am in love with coffee houses and I prefer a bit of a tattered bohemian feel to my shops as opposed to the sleek modern chain monsters. I like my coffee shops like I do my art, a little dirty and twisted. I have enjoyed many shops and my favorite ones offer poetry and acoustic music on a regular basis. These are my type of people indulging in my type of drink!

Do you have a special brew you like to indulge in? How do you take your coffee?

Wow! Coffee for sleep!? Well, you know I knew a couple of people during my life that actually needed coffee to go to sleep, I find that amazing! I'm also a coffee lover but the moment I ended sipping my cup, I stay awake for hours!!!

Well, since I'm from Costa Rica I prefer drinking costarican coffee only, and I like the ones from a region called "Los Santos" that is more sweet and the other from "Tres Ríos" that is more acidic. I hate dark roast, I only like light roasted coffee.

That quote reminds me of that Pope that people wanted to ban coffee for being a devil's drink and he answered back saying something like "But why!?, if this a devil's drink we should cheat him and drink it anyways!" hahahah! Those old times! Great post by the way Papa!

Oh some of the best coffee I have ever enjoyed was when I was in Costa Rica! I don't remember the type or brand, but it was heavenly, especially with the raw sugar that was used at the hotel!

Nice! there's lot of good brands around here, but there's also lots loooooots of garbage. Hahaha! Wow, you've been in here!? I hope you had enjoyed your time around! Raw sugar is a nice touch too! Nowadays, I tried to drink it without sugar, but something I indulge myself with a little tiny teaspoon of sugar.

I visited for a little over a month back in 1993 or 1994. We stayed mainly near San Jose. It was an awesome experience.

Yessss... You know, I never thought a beverage could be part of who you are, but in the case of coffee, it absolutely can.
I like pretty much any coffee. For regular consumption, I like to get Kicking Horse coffee off of amazon, or Sweet Water coffee, which I have to order through an online group, since they dont sell to individuals and I cant find it for sale here.
Both are organic, fair trade coffees, both have fantastic blends, and both are super delicious! :D

Depending on my mood, I alternate between coffee and hot tea. I adore Emeril's Big Easy Bold blend. It has a slight chicory flavor to it, but I can only get it through amazon. That is my go to writing coffee on my off days. At work I have a local coffee shop where I consume way too much of their salted caramel breves. I also like dark Sumatran blends. When I'm drinking hot tea, it is always, always, always Twinning Irish Breakfast Tea...lol

Sounds fabulous! I may have to try some of those just for something different.
I had bought a chicory based coffee substitute when it was on clearance at our local health food store. (Normally $10 and was only $1 woo hoo!) I used it in conjunction with my normal coffee and it was delicious! I actually want to start buying chicory so I can my my own coffee blend. :D

ooooo making your own coffee blend with chicory sounds interesting. Let us know how it turns out if you get around to it.

Haha, you know me, 'if you get around to it' is the truth.
I think I will. I just need to wait for the extra $$ and Ill order some.
Its about the same price as my normal expensive coffee that I buy, so technically Id not be spending more. ;)

I like this estimate

Ah, yes, I love coffee, too! I drink a pot of it every day, and sometimes a second pot in the evenings! As a lifelong Southerner, though, I dunno if it's coffee or sweet tea that's the elixir of the gods — I think it's a toss-up! 😁

I don't drink Coffee i can't stand the taste.

Perfect! And here I was thinking we were going to hang out when I made it down there!!! Lol

You can have a Coffee and i will have a tea all good mate :)

I love a good cup of hot tea as well, so maybe this will work out...lol

It will work out mate:)

I hope what I am about to say doesnt cause you to block and unfriend me, althought I now I am a rarity I just have never been a hot drink person and cannot stand the smell of coffee, I drink water pretty much only these days and I think the last tim I had a hot drink was in the seventies

Great! First it was @j85063 and now you! Lol. I definitely understand. I used to think my dad was a maniac drinking hot coffee in the middle of summer and now I do the same!

All my family are coffee or tea drinkers, I have always been different lOL

Awww, I am in love with coffee too and have tried many different kinds of it. Still, and old simple Turkish one is the way to go for me 💚

Thanks for the comment and support. I am starting my second cup of coffee as I type! lol

I LOVE coffee! I like it strong, no sugar, no milk :)

Recently I found passion in Matcha latte too but coffee is still my favourite!

Thank you for sharing your passion with us!

I've never tried that, sounds like something to add to my to-do list.

For Sure!
Bit of a coffee addict myself... when I was still "in a real job", the only thing that could drag me away from my PC was a coffee/smoke break.

Nowadays, I take breaks from my coffee to have a beer :P

Most days I drink so much coffee that it feels like taking a break when i drink anything else.

I can't get the taste for coffee, I drink sweet tea. I always have a pitcher made and all of my friends comment on how good my tea always tastes. If they go out anywhere there is a good chance they will stop by here first and have a glass of tea.

I grew up on sweet tea and drank about a gallon a day for most of my adult life. I recently gave it up about 3 years ago to try to limit my sugar intake. There is no way I'm drinking cold tea with artificial sweeteners in it! yuck!

I bet you were longing for sweet tea as you were writing the post eh? I agree about the artificial sweeteners. I have friends who say "oh it tastes just the same with Splenda." And I tell them they are blaspheming.

And I tell them they are blaspheming.

I literally just lol'd There is nothing more sacred in the South than sweet tea! I actually wrote a post about in some time ago!

We grow up with sweet tea in our bottles, and learn to make sun tea in the summer with the hose when we weren't allowed in the house because "it was too nice outside and we had to go and play". I am quite addicted to it now. Sadly, I'm a "pusher" because I have turned others on to my addiction. It's just a cultural thing, "come in sit a spell and have some sweet tea."

lol I can't seem to find it now, but I just commented on a post about drinking sweet tea from a bottle as a kid!

Ha! I'm so glad we had this interaction. I'm drinking tea now...Come on try it again, you know you want to :)

must......resist.......the........tea........pusher! lol

Just because that quote is made up doesn't mean it's not the truth...LOL!

I've never been able to do black, but I can skip the cream as long as there's sugar (although I've cut back on the extra sweet in recent years). One of my favorites at the moment is Patriots Blend (https://amzn.to/2NyfnAt).

via GIPHY

That patriots blend looks promising. I may have to give it a try. Wonderful gif as always!

I especially love that it's roasted locally (because anywhere in New England is local...LOL!). And glad you like the gif - it makes me smile every time I see it! 😊

When I was in Hawaii, I grew to love Kona Macadamian Nut.

Now that I don't live there anymore, I have friends ship it to me.

Nice post.

Namaste, Jaichai

Oh yes, I love Kona blends as well!

Coffee, coffee coffee... I'm addicted! When I was studying, I would have way too much. Now, I try to stick to two a day maximum. One in the morning with breakfast and then one in the early afternoon if needed. It's such a great feeling when you discover a place that makes a really good coffee that you can fold into your routine!

I definitely partake way too much, but it and food is my only vices so I guess that's not too bad.....lol Thanks for the support and comment.

I am a coffee guy and I have friends in Guatemala that own a coffee plantation, so good beans is part of my daily dose for sure, but I sure have to cut off the coffee by noon or I will never sleep.

Oh man, how lucky are you to have friends with a coffee plantation!?! I was able to visit a few many years ago when I visited Costa Rica. I was fascinated how they stepped the mountains and grew coffee all the way up the side of the hills. It was crazy looking.

The people I know in Guatemala showed me pictures of there place it sounds very similar in CR as to what their place is like.

I wish I knew how to appreciate coffee like everyone else but maybe the taste & smell is just too strong for me.

The only time I do take coffee is when I'm doing my Business Plan & need an overdrive of energy

Well it is definitely great fuel to get things done when you're busy for sure!

I love coffee too, more of your Dad’s mild palette though
And I have no problem going to sleep after a cuppa too 😊

If my wife has even a sip of caffeine after lunch she is up all night and I drink it on my way to the bedroom! lol

😂
Ah I wish it would keep me awake though

I LOVE my coffee too :) I couldn't imagine my life without it. There truly is something magical about it. I also learnt to enjoy coffee from my father. Every weekend he would make it at home in the mornings and to this day the smell always reminds me of him and lazy weekends at home with my family.

You know, I never put the emotional connection together before, but that is probably the root of my passion for this heavenly elixir as well! It was something my father and I enjoyed by ourselves from a very early age.

Coffee....so much information and so many goodness....my instructor told me to have black cofee before gym which helps me lot in reducing my weight...

Posted using Partiko Android

I can see that method working at helping you by drinking it before gym!

Yes...most probably it boost up the blood circulation. Before any strenous excersies

Ahh, coffee. I am also a huge fan. I take mine black. Although I have been known to indulge in the occasional pumpkins spiced latte 😂

I also enjoy adding those International Delight flavored creamers from time to time, but that’s pretty rare.

Three cheers for coffee!!! ☕️

Great quote 😁

Glad you liked the quote..lol. i had a partner I used to work graveyard shift with who would take those little cups of international delights and pop them straight into his mouth. He was a bit of a nut!

I never trusted a creamer that could sit out at room temperature for days... 😆

I know right!?! It's like playing the botulism lottery!

Hahaha, I love it! Laughed out loud pretty hard at that one XD

I prefer my own brew to mega coffee shop's brew. But when I do want to indulge in coffee shop coffee I choose a little out of the way Bohemian place that has the best pastries and sandwiches on freshly baked artisan bread...😋🥖🍰

I have the exact same philosophy about coffee shops. I like mine a out of the way and a bit twisted...lol Thanks for coming by!

@papacrusher
I grew up on coffee too. My little sister, 6 years younger than me. When she was in diapers cried for coffee so we would fake her out and put a tiny bit in her milk in her bottle. BTW: She is still a brat.

BTW: She is still a brat.

Aren't all little sisters though? Today was an extremely slow day for me, I only had three cups, but I'm about to brew my evening cup and get some writing done!

I wish you were closer we could enjoy a cup in person. I don't even know where you are. LOL
I need to make decaff or I will not sleep.

Some of the best conversations were had and some of the most memorable bonds formed over cups of coffee with people who would come to be known as friends. I'm in Georgia just SW of the ATL! Or as we call it the DIRTY DIRTY!

Been through Atlanta a number of times in a Big Rig with my husband.
That loop is insane. Is the storm on the east coast affecting you there?
I was born and raised in Texas.

So far it looks like we may get a bit of rain. The east side of Georgia near Augusta may get some wind and heavy rain before it's over.

Atl traffic is a beast of it's own, with no known weaknesses...lol

crazy .. once we did the whole loop by accident lol

I'm having CAFIX now. :-) No caffeine

I'm not familiar with CAFIX, is it a coffee based drink?

I had a neighbor once who was like your dad ... she drank coffee all day, every day, and she had a pace maker lol She always said the coffee kept it running so well :)

I like my coffee shops like I do my art, a little dirty and twisted.

Same :) I knew there was another reason why I liked you so much :)

oops, I almost forgot. I'm not a huge Starbucks fan for a million different reasons, but at one time they had a coffee called Komodo Dragon .... deeelicious!

I agree 100% about starbucks and try to avoid them as much as possible. My wife makes me take her there during the holidays for the cranberry bliss bars! It's funny you mentioned the pacemaker, my dad has had 6-7 heart attacks and credits coffee to his survival rate with them!

haha! the best made up quote ever sir papacrusher! and ohhhh coffee with that dreamy cream cheese cake! wow. breakfast of champions!
wonderful post and I bet 95% of steemians on here can totally relate..what kind of art is that which you like?

I love making up quotes. I like them to start of serious and then get a bit twisted. And that was EXACTLY my breakfast for several mornings after making the cake!

When it comes to art my "big name" favorites have always been Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Chuck Close, Dale Chihuly, Edvard Munch, Hieronymus Bosch and many more. When it comes to a bit lesser know artists and folk artists I really like Mark Ryden, Mr. Hooper, and Chuck Hodi. I have two small original pieces from Mr. Hooper, he is a really cool dude working out of Tennessee.

How about you? Any artists that really strike a chord with you?

howdy sir papacrusher...oh my, well no..I don't know much about art and the only name I recognize of those you listed is Salvador Dali. I do like the Western artists like Remington and Russell though.

But the good news is that steemit has many art fans that you can discuss art with right?

I've always loved the bronze sculpture with the western themes. It has a unique way of capturing the wild and ruggedness of the period.

That is the beauty of art there is usually something for everyone.

yes sir papacrusher I love those bronzes too, hopefully can get one someday. have you found lots of artists on here?

Here is a shot of my two Mr. Hooper pieces:

oh wow sir papacrusher these are wonderfully unique and amazing, is this guy still at it?
Hey my wife just applied for a corrections officer position today! have no idea if she'll get it, when she first sat down for the interview I think they were thinking "no way, she's too old" but by the time it was over they were chatting like old friends. Well one of the interviewers was a woman so she and my wife were chatting like old friends.
it's for the county jail, not a federal prison or anything.

tell you wife I say good luck and I hope she gets the position. It takes a special kind of communicator to do well in corrections.

howdy sir papacrusher! yes sir well she is so ...I don't know how to say it but she knows at a glance what someone is like so that could come in handy, no one will be able to con her.

I am in love with coffee houses and I prefer a bit of a tattered bohemian feel to my shops as opposed to the sleek modern chain monsters. I like my coffee shops like I do my art, a little dirty and twisted.

Yep. Yes indeed. My favourite ever coffee shop was called The Boiler Room. Found it in Port Townsend, Washington (or somewhere thereabouts) when I was 14 and could drink pots of coffee. It was grunge, dripping with artists, dirty in the best possible way.

Sadly, my love affair with coffee is one of moderation. I can't drink it like I used to, but I appreciate the smell, even when I have to deprive myself of the taste.

Aren't those just the best coffee shops!?!

Serendipity! I am working on a post about my new coffee roaster. Those beans in your photo above look perfect--not too dark or light. I roast for espresso, which most think of as needing to be very dark--almost completely burnt, but the best roast for espresso is closer to your photo above. (Just don't tell Starbucks ;-)

Proud member of #steemitbloggers @steemitbloggers

how cool! I can't wait to read about your roaster!

I love coffee, there's one period of my life I was so crazy about it I tried every type of beans that I can find, buy books to study.

Now I still drink 2-3 cups per day, and it doesn't have any effects on me as in preventing me from sleep at night. I just really enjoy the smell and taste of it, and I take it Black, occasionally add in some brown sugar.

There is nothing like the smell of a good coffee brewing. It brings forth so many emotions and memories!

Absolutely agree!
