When it comes to reality, today's world in USA is mostly materialistic. Let's be honest, and think about it. We have an incredibly high standard of living compared with most of other counties. We throw crazy parties, we buy gifts all the time! How about Christmas? It is the most materialistic holiday in our society!
We work and work and work to make money and we love spending it.

Unfortunately, we define our lives by how much money we make and have. We believe that money brings a better life and more happiness. But this is so far from truth. Although Americans have the highest standard of living, they take more anti-depressants than any other people in the world, and this is a proven fact.
It is easy to get caught up in materialism. Let me share an example from my life.
A while ago, I was shopping at Home Depot for a new vacuum cleaner. I actually made a post about it, you can read it here .....Shopping for a Vacuum Cleaner
I did not find the vacuum cleaner I wanted, but I saw a lot of other appliances that caught my eyes. I loved a refrigerator, although I had one at home, working perfectly. I just liked the brand new one, it looked so good. It had no additional features or improvements, and it was expensive. But guess what? I bought it after a few days! I used my credit card, so I will pay it in installments... so I will get more burdened with bills, because that's why we work for: to pay bills.
This is our mentality today. This is a result of the materialistic society and culture we live in. In my case, the new refrigerator gave me a little excitement for a couple of days, but it neither change my life, nor brought me ever-lasting happiness.
In conclusion, our lives should not be defined by what we own. Wealth doesn't bring happiness. The material possessions are temporary, they don't last forever, life is short and we must appreciate what we have. We must stop the race to make more and more money every day and accumulate useless things that we don't take with us when we die.
'We Live in a Materialistic World' a lot of people have forgotten their spiritual purpose, many have gotten carried away by the materialistic tendencies, the spirit rules the world and we should not forgot out origin. Thanks for sharing.

Yes I agree! I love to shop too but I constantly tell myself my identity is not defined by what I own too!! It is hard to be always remembering that in this materialistic world. Your points are valid and right on, @starjewel!

It's a vicious cycle... the more they spend, the more they need to earn... and the more they earn, the more they want to spend... Doesn't ensure happiness though, does it... :(

@starjewel,
It's true. We are dopamine addicts ... that was the neuro-chemical payoff for your new fridge. It's also the cause of all addictions. Studying your brain and how it works, helps. Once you understand why you're compelled to do things, it's easier to intervene.

There is no question that north american society, as a whole, is a materialistic one. You could call me a minimalist however. The same fridge that was in my home, when aquiring it over 30 years ago, is still in use.
Maybe it is my daughter's painting of grapes (which we have out back) which has had me overide my materialistic training.
When it finally dies we shall have to hang the door on the wall. 😎

I guess so. It is a beautiful painting 😊 I want to become a minimalist. I will. The first step is acknowledging my materialistic tendencies, so I am on the right track.

Congrats to you for working to break the bonds. We are saturated with materialistic psyops, from a strole through Home Depo to the grocery's check out (not to mention the programming on TVs).

If only more people will look inwards, they will find that or lives does not depend on what we own. In fact, the more we acquire material things, the more we are not satisfied. This feeds an endless circle of buy more, wanting more, and working ourselves to death to live up to this "standard of living". How so deplorable!! Thanks @starjewel

Such a good post to point out the world issue. Yes, that's our mentality. We like to compare our life and children with others, even we also bearly have enough to survive but due to pride we still want to earn enough to show off . #socialsickness

I am glad to see more and more posts on the topic everywhere. I also got into the materialistic world for a while and each belonging required me to take care of it, to make a room for it. I quickly realized that I was putting a lot of effort to clean and to tidy my home because of the stuff I had. I devoted my weekends to this (because I can't live in a chaos) and instead of starting the week relaxed and inspired, I was exhausted. I have always been a minimalist at heart and it was time for me to remember how I want to live my life. So I did. I gave all the stuff I didn't use or like to people who really need them and I was really satisfied. So now, I can clean my whole apartment just for an hour or two and it's such a relief! There's more time for me to spend with my friends and family, I have more money to invest in experiences like traveling, theatre, concerts or going to yoga classes. And I definitely feel happy.

It is the urge to have more and better. Obviously Money plays a key factor. The more the money the need arises...which make us happy...but this is not reall happiness . these are only for short term of getting our need fulfilled
