Challenge #23 Post - "MOTHER NATURES MEDICINE CABINET", by @mudcat36.

@mudcat36 presents an interesting post in the Homesteading category, a post about natural medicines, how herbs and plants can be used to replace or complement some of our more common medicines.

What do you think of natural medicines? Do you have a lot of experience yourself and have you tried something else not mention in this post? Are you sceptic and think it doesn't work at all, are you like: "better take an Aspirin to get rid of that pain"? Please check out the post and let us know what you think.

Remember that a valid entry is a comment written below, but please feel free to add the same comment to @mudcat36's post.

thanks so much @danielsaori for giving such a minnow like me a chance.
The herb based article is a very interesting one. we so much believe in herbs here in Africa .

The best thing that interest me is the plantain herbs. For the fact that its edible and can be used in salad will make it easy to use unlike some herbs that comes with irritating smells.

we have a leaf here in Nigeria too that prevents diabetes and measles. It will be squeezed and the water gotten out from it can be put in clean water and drank. For solving Measles,

the leaf will be squeezed with liqour that alcoholic content is not too high, The water gotten from it will be taken and used to rub the body of the person with measeles day and night. The best thing is that the leaf is edible too and can be cooked as vegetable.but!it bitter when first tasted but after some seconds it becomes sweet.isnt that great?

When using herbs, Moderation should be put in place, very importantly

I'm happy to comment in this contest, you are a Man of high intellectual faculty @danielsaori Thank you for upgrading people's interest in herbal medicine by organising this contest.

Here's my entry @danielsaori sir.

Thanks @mudcat36 for this very informative article.
I read every line carefully not to miss anything.
In my village it is believed that herbs administration works in sinequanon with proverbs.
Here is one...
Until the rotten tooth is pulled out, the mouth must continue to chew with caution.

It's high time people learnt to appreciate natural medicine. I'm a very big fan of herbs and roots for medication.
I may not know their botanical names but I knew a lot of herbs through my grandfather and I cherish all.

When I saw PLANTAIN in your post, my eyes opened wide just for me to see a difference in specie.
But for the WILLOW TREE, I must commend you for adding immensely to my God-given knowledge about herbs.

Excellent choice @danielsaori! I'm impressed at how you find such a wide range of interesting topics each week! Awesome!

Here is my entry:

This is a very good post @mudcat36... I'm glad @danielsaori highlighted it... He does manage to find some interesting topics that people post about.

I didn't realize that in addition to your crypto skills you also had a bit of nature savvy in you. I'm very impressed. Now don't get me wrong, I'm easily impressed by something I'm not familiar with! :)

Seriously, that is very cool and I love to see the different pieces of knowledge you have shown us... I particularly like the willow tree as we have many of them and that sounds better than aspirin!

Good job and great post.. I'm glad to see you get some good recognition on it! :)

Confirmed!
Cryptos and natural medicines are an interesting but cool combination.
Headaches from a 60% Etherum drop, the willow tree can come in handy. :)

Confirmed! And voted too! Hahaha

Congratulations, this newbie nickel is sponsored by #steemitcommentchallenge this week!

#newbieresteemday highly recommends this sponsor!

hahaha... funny @danielsaori! You should enter your own game, you'd get my vote! lol

Actually, I have no rule preventing it... ;)

Ok I am voting for you! :) I'm going there right now!!! (good luck, and I hope the judge is fair with you) ;)

Your right not every ill needs a pill. Herbs can be just as effective in some cases. You just need to be sure that you are taking the right plant... maybe have somebody with proper knowledge with the first few times.

Confirmed!
Yes, having someone to learn from, to correctly identify the plant is probably the best way. Reading about it can make us make the wrong conclusions.

Great post it is very interesting

Nyc 1 bro

Great pick @danielsaori!

This is what i commented on the OP:
Such great information here! I absolutely love the Willow tree, just for the looks! I never knew it had medicinal qualities. I dont think Id ever heard of Tansy before but you can bet I wont forget it now. Texas is terrible with mosquitoes. Im definitely going to look into getting some planted, hopefully theyll grow good in our area. And Plantains?!?! Ive heard of them being good for tummy issues but ever actually tried them out. Will have to keep that in mind when the times arrived. But my favorite out of them all, has to be the GUELDER ROSE! Where was this at for me 3 years ago?! ;)

Thank you for this post. Sometimes its easy to forget that nature sometimes has the best medicine!

Confirmed!
Great comment and thanks for sharing some additional tips.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I tried :)

I am not familiar with most of these plants. We have some willows that I see in the city. I didn't know it has medicinal benefit.

Growing up in the mountains and to parents who came from a family of farmers, natural medicine is not new for me. I have the same comment in one of @joalvarez' posts about medicinal plants. I grew up with books like Healing Wonders of Herbs and Healing Wonders of Water and lately Encyclopedia of Natural Remedies. Although I don't know the content by heart but it comes in handy when we are struck with something. Through the years, these have helped us avoid being hospitalized.

Prevention is better than cure. It helps much more to grow plants in our yard naturally. To have a ready source of such plants in our yard will give us more benefits.

This post gives us additional knowledge that what we consider as weeds and ornamental plants can be a source of remedies too.

Thank you for helping others. This is what I love about steemit and this is what makes me stay. Everyone has a lot to offer and are ready to help.

Confirmed!
Thank you leeart. Happy to have you here.

Thanks for having me :D

Here's my entry sir @danielsaori

Hi @mudcat36. Your post is very ineresting and a lot helper for those who needs alternative medicines. I dont know much of the herbs or plants you used in making such medicine but what i found interesting is the information that you provid, especially on the benefits of these plants.
Here in our country, Philippines, we have this "malunggay" or so called Moringa Oliefera. It is also a plant that has lots of benefits. It can be a covèr for a sudden little wound, a herbal drink too. Other scientists too produces a herbal capsule that contains malunggay.
Overall, doing such things is quite helpful for us just staying ho,e, and also useful in our daily lives. I guess that's why we had this phrase "survival of the fittest", which we need to do something that help us live more of our lives.
Keep posting such useful and helpful post @mudcat36. Godbless and long live.

Confirmed!
Thanks Vontot.

Hey @mudcat, love to see what other handy herbs and plants you come up with. This was great! I can tell you put some effort into this. The one I was surprised by was actually the Tansy. I didn't know that could help get rid of intestinal worms....gross, but cool! I'd be curious to know which kinds.

As far as the nature's "toilet paper," I specifically recall a camping trip my parents took us on. My mom forgot to pack toilet paper, so she went around and foraged for soft "toilet paper" leaves, is what she called them. They looked like this:

Image result for toilet paper plant

As a kid, it was humiliating, but I'll never forget how soft those leaves were..... :0)

That was a great story about nature's toilet paper. :)

This contest is already over, ended last week Friday. But a new one was posted Sunday in case you are interested to join. Take care and see you around.

Great article @mudcat36 Your right there, you defiantly don't want to mistake Ragwort for Tansy!!
Here in the UK this time of the year as I am sure you are, I'm patiently waiting for the nettle and the cleavers to give their precious springtime tonic 😊

Amazing Speedy Smiley Man :)

Sure @danielsaori why not, I will make a post about it for You and post you a link to it 😊
Have a wonderful day 😊

I miss the abundance of nettles and cleavers. Most of all I miss the opportunity to stick cleavers on peoples backs as we walk through woods. Never grows old.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

My thoughts on why clevers cling onto us as we walk in the springtime in the UK is because they are subtlety telling us of their benefits @riverflows 😊

Like... drink me in tea, drink me in tea, drink me in tea?

Yes yes yes 😊

You doing good a job sir 😍 . Keep up the nice work.

Reesteemed

Wow. @mudcat36 is one of a kind writer. I bet the post would be more awesome if more plants were included in mother nature's medicine cabinet.

I agree. There are a lot of stuff on Earth that work wonders. One would be nature's natural medicine. In plants. From vines to trees. Herbal medicine. I should know. And I have already appreciated this on some botany lectures in college.

In fact, some illnesses can be cured naturally. Synthetic medicines do more harm instead. But, I want to emphasize this, it varies. Case to case basis, in other words. Sometimes herbal medicine is good, sometimes not.

At the first phase of my kidney failure, I have depended on herbal medicines too. Because some people got cured from kidney diseases just by drinking herbal medicines. But it made me worse. Because herbal medicines work differently in different people, in different cases. Nevertheless, most people can still benefit from these.

Confirmed!
Sorry to hear about your kidney. Did you only have problems with one of them and how is your current condition? I hope you are doing fine!

Hahaha. Two kidneys. Im already preparing for my kidney transplant. My brother's the donor. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear that! I wish you the best of success with the transplantation and I hope for a quick recovery. Take care!!

For a medicine hater like me, natural remedies are the way to go. The plants that were mentioned in the post, I only know some of them but the others, I didn't know they existed. It was a great post letting others know more about natural remedies. I have a lot of experience with natural medicines. Like the oregano plant for cough and colds. That is the basic one and which is, the best! (though it doesn't taste good) but for me, it is better than taking a pill or a tablet :D I also heard from my mom and also, it was featured in the news. This plant is called "paragis". They just recently discovered about this. It is actually a grass but it has a lot of health benefits like, it can cure UTI, highblood pressure, fever, sprain, and dandruff. I still believe that natural medicines are good and more easy on our body than medicines bought in the pharmacies. :)

Confirmed!
I had no idea about Oregano being helpful for a cough and cold. I have to try it next time, but hopefully not too soon... ;)
I knew this article was going to turn into some interesting with many tips from fellow Steemians. Thanks @mudcat36 for sharing the original post with us.

Haha. I know right? Be careful with your health because yes, oregano is helpful for cough and colds. My mama used to make a tea out of it whenever we have cough before. But the taste is really so bad. HAHA :D :D But, it is effective though :) Yup. Thanks @mudcat36.

Now I'm getting curious. I love oregano but can't imagine how it would taste as tea. Have to give it a try. :)

Hey all, I've been following these comments since yesterday and you all inspired me to write a post about a tonic I make every year. I was thinking of the various herbs you have and wondering if they could be added too - @happysmilingman definately add cleavers and nettles! - anyway, I'm sure you've heard of it, but for those that haven't, I'd love to contribute to the knowledge pool - here it is here https://steemit.com/food/@riverflows/hot-damn-fire-cider-for-immunity-and-cold-season-relief - definately not a plug, just a thankyou for inspiring my writing today xx All the best xx

Confirmed!
Thank you! See comment on your post. :)

The diversity of life on our planet is astounding. And given enough time and careful management of our natural resources, science will find cures for most of the ailments that afflict humankind.

My own forays into natural healing are still in their infancy, there’s so much to learn, but I’ve found most natural remedies incredibly effective, environmentally-friendly, and safe – something that becomes even more important when you have kids. Not only are our children tiny and innocent and pure, but they also put almost everything in their mouths, all the more reason to keep it as natural as possible.

Natural products range from aspirin (originally obtained from the willow tree) to taxol, the anti-cancer drug discovered in the Pacific yew tree. About half of all anti-cancer drugs introduced since the 1940s are either natural products or medicines derived directly from natural products, the study notes.

For Thyme, Historically thyme is known for its propensity to prevent winter colds and flu thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties.
Combine thyme with sage and you've got a wonder treatment that is said to boost the immune system to guard against colds and flu. Use fresh or dried leaves to make a soothing tea or spritz it on to a sore throat.
Tannins in the plant also help relieve mild diarrhoea according to Steven Foster and Rebecca L Johnson, authors of Desk Reference For Nature's Medicine.

Confirmed!
I'm sorry I missed your comment among all the rest. Fixed now. ;)
Now I learned something new about Thyme as well. Thank you for sharing it!
Next time I get a cold I should try mixing thyme, oregano, basil, and ginger.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

Yes, natural is preferable to chemicals. Although I don't recognise all of @mudcat36's plants, in South Africa we have the willow and perhaps tansy ... I will confer with our local experts about the others. I use basil and mint a lot, especially for coughs and colds, and of course garlic which is a natural antibiotic. Also cannabis leaves, infused with a bit of coconut oil, which helps insomnia ... add a bit of honey. As I am very close to the beach, there are amazing succulents on the dunes known as Natal sour fig, which are great for stings, eczema etc. and apparently a whole lot of other ailments which I'll research and post. I'll also go down to the beach to photograph them to show my fellow steemians. Great topic, excellent choice @danielsaori.

Confirmed!
Thank you leighleigh for sharing this with us.

Thanks @danielsaori and @mudcat36 for this opportunity given to everyone!
It is important to know that orthodox medicine all came from herbal extract.
As a young boy growing up in the village, I never come to have a taste of orthodox medicine until my university days. My parents always guarded our health and well-being with some doses of herbal medicine.
so in my opinion, I am of the assertion that natural medicine supersedes orthodox medicine.

Confirmed!
Thank you Denis for your comment.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I grew up in a mountain province during my childhood days. And I did experience a lot in taking up herbal medicine in curing sickness. Not to mention applying leaves on my scars as a band aid. We're living in a mountain that time, so securing medicines would take a lot of time and costs a lot. Natural medicine does helps a lot, not only to save money but also a way of treating illness in a safe way (I guess). I remembered when my little sister had a dengue and they sneak out a water of a boiled weed (I dont know the name of that weed) in the hospital because it's what my parents and grand parents believed that would help her recover. She did recover fast. Until now, my parents is using that natural medicine. Because they think that medicines from the pharmacy would harm their body. As for me, Im somewhat forced to drink their grossly tasting tonic but whenever they're not watching I drink a "legit" medicine. XD

Confirmed!
Thank you for your great personal comment.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I'm glad today's topic is relatable for me. hehe

Good to note that toxic ragwort should not be confused for tansy , i have them alot in my compound. Thank God say i read this post well oo, i don dey plan to pluck all of them take pursue all these mosquito wey carry straw fr my house . Lol.... Shoutout to @mudcat36

Confirmed!
Indeed it is important to be able to accurately identify the correct plant/herb. Can go terrible wrong otherwise.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

Natural medicine is here to stay as much as orthodox drugs. We all should have an open mind towards both. In my part of the world (Nigeria), both synthetic drugs and natural plant-based remedies are generally accepted. Many serious illnesses are taken to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment. Some sort of health problems are best handled using roots and herbs and there are no shortage of these nature cure. We use some herbs for malaria, typhoid, eye infections, dysentry and bowel diseases. Personally i decide either to go to the hospital, or take a local herb depending on the prevailing health condition. So both herbs and drugs are acceptable to me and I use them at various times.

Confirmed!
Thank you Charles for your comment.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Natural medicine is something that should be really taken into consideration. Of course, when things with human's health get very complicated, you cannot just count on the nature for complete healing. I try to use some antibiotics and other similar stuff only when there is no improvement in my medical condition(illness) for more than a week or two. Just until then, I use mother nature's herbs, spices and whatever is proved to work with human's health. The diversity is tremendous and there are natural cures for almost everything.

The thing here is that, in my opinion, all the medicines pills and other drugs have some negative or side effects for our bodies. And we should take special care for ourselves. After all, our bodies are our temples, people said and this fact should lead us on our everyday life.

Confirmed!
Thx Miroslav.
