Are you going to build a house worth 15 million pesos in a flooded area?

One year after the destruction of typhoon Ondoy in 2009, my uncle Henry and his wife Perlie decided to buy a house and lot worth 2 Million Pesos in Provident Village, Marikina City, Philippines. Then, they demolished the house and built a three-storey house worth 13 million pesos.

Provident Village was became famous for being one of the hardest-hit areas in Metro Manila during the destructive attacked of typhoon Ondoy. The village is surrounded by a dike to protect them from floods if the river will overflow.

The village was like a basin that kept the water because it was a very low-lying area that used to be part of the waterway.

Provident Village became more famous because Cristine Reyes, was the first celebrity victim featured on the news with her family on the roof of their house and it was Richard Gutierrez, a Filipino actor also who came to rescue Cristine using a borrowed speedboat.

My uncle and his wife has a properties in other locations and they were living with their four children in Diliman, Quezon City before they moved in to Provident Village.

Many people discouraged them to buy a property in Marikina City especially in Provident because of its flooded history, and I am one of those.

Then, after a year the house was completely done and furnished, their family moved in. As a family, we will be worried for their safety every time a typhoon or heavy rain will fall, but there is one thing my uncle and his wife said that really touched our hearts...

They storied first how they really prepared for the construction and designs of the house. The ground floor is empty, have you think why they made it empty? They purposely made it empty, to be prepared if the floods will come... no furniture or stuffs will be damaged.

Then, they told us the one and only reason why they chose to build a house in a flooded area specially Marikina City.
The reason is because the parents, sisters, brothers and other relatives of my auntie lives nearby Provident Village in Marikina City only.

When Ondoy onslaughts the whole Marikina City, all their relatives affected by the flood and there were no way to ran...

They bought a property and built a three-storey house so there will be a nearby place where their family and relatives can ran on to during emergency.

Our hearts was really touched for what they did...They are willing to sacrifice their own safety to help their loved ones.

Your uncle is wise enough to understand the complexities in the flooded area like Marikina. He really knows what will happen just in case and he had help many for that particular reason.

Sometimes it's wise to help yourself first and then when you're able to help you'll be ready to extend a hand. Thanks for sharing this story.

Here's the story...
When Your Presence Is Enough

Nope. If it floods once it will do it again. In my country its always the same places that flood with storms. There might be ten years between bad ones but its always the same places that suffer.
