Gerridae, bioindicators of water pollution that walks on the surface of water

We will definitely be happy to see clear water and free from pollution. Clear water was also very well-liked by various types of animals. Often animals even become indicators of whether the water in the area is still in good condition. One of them is an insect that moves on water which we call "anggang-anggang" / gerridae. If there are still many insects found, the water in the area is still relatively healthy and pollution levels are not too large.
This animal likes to walk on water and has a shape like a spider. Seeing from its shape the layman would mistakenly think of this animal as a 'water spider'.
The buds come from the Gerridae family, which are commonly found in calm waters such as ponds, rivers or lakes. Grapes are used as bio indicators of organic pollution. This insect can detect changes in water quality, so that it can be used as a clue to the occurrence of pollution. Pollution due to detergents and fabric dyes affects the death of the orchids.
Drums have a dark or black color with a cylindrical antenna and are longer than the head. The length of the metaphemur passes through the tip of the abdomen and the size of the body is between 3-18 mm. They have wings but they are not reliable pilots. For smaller insects, especially aerial insects, frogs are predators. He will also prey on insects trapped on the surface of the water, such as flies and mosquitoes.
Walking on water
This type of gerridae can walk on the surface of the water. Many people think that the ability of orchids to walk on water because it has a light body. Many people assume that the density is smaller than the density of water. In fact what happened was not like that.
We can prove by sinking the orchids and he can float again. This is different from the stereo foam that we release into the water will float. If we put it in cork water it will float again.
The ability to move frogs on the surface of the water also cannot be called walking because the gerridae never raise their legs. They move by rowing with their middle feet.
Anggang-anggang can move using the principle of water tension. Water molecules have a fairly large density. Water can also hold objects on it if it is not too heavy. An orchid can survive on water without sinking due to several factors such as:
- The surface area of the anggang-anggang's legs, giving rise to the upward pressure as in a ship that does not sink.
- Surface tension force. Water can hold these insects from sinking with the morphology of their feet.
- Hydrophobic surface on his feet. Their feet are not wet because the water molecules do not stick so they do not add weight to the gerridae.
- Micro hair on the foot of the gerridae. With the number of very small sized hair makes a lot of air trapped in between the sea hair. This adds to their ability not to sink.

So it is the LACK of theses insects that signals polluted water? I can think of one lovely and clean waterfall near my house in Thailand that had HUNDREDS of these in the tiny, warm rock pools off to the sides of the falls where the insects gather and breed.
