Thick glasses break more easily when filled with hot water

Hi Steemian how are you? Hopefully always healthy and creative work.
This afternoon I was with the children at home. I asked my first child to boil water because I wanted to drink coffee. It has become customary if we want to make coffee, we boil water to boil to make delicious coffee.
After that he took three glasses with different thicknesses. After adding coffee and sugar he poured hot water. Hot water that is put into a thin glass immediately seized with coffee after stirring perfectly. I can smell Gayo coffee which is famous for its deliciousness.
But when pouring on thick glass suddenly the sound of cracked glass.
"Ouch how could it be broken?" My son asked.
"It's okay let me replace the glass"
I replied, removing the broken glass.
I immediately took a thin glass and added coffee and sugar. Immediately I pour hot water and stir with spoon. Then we also continue the conversation. One of them is about a thick glass that breaks when poured hot water.

Uneven expansion

In physic lessons we are taught about expansion. If an object gets heat then the particles in the object move faster and need more space.
Likewise, the glass is poured hot water. The inner glass surface will first expand. The temperature of the glass inside the surface increases. This rising temperature will quickly propagate towards the outer layer of the glass.
In thin glass the heat received canals reach the outside faster so that the expansion will be relatively concurrent
It will be different in thick glasses. When poured in hot water the inside is already expanding and will urge the outside is still cold
When the glass is not able to continue the speed of heat propagation, an uneven expansion occurs and ends in the breaking of the glass.

How to prevent

A clear glass made of quartz sand and a mixture of other materials that easily expand when exposed to heat. If the expansion process is forced, that is, with fresh boiling hot water, the glass will break.
So that the glass does not break when poured hot water we can use the following method.

1. Place the spoon in the glass.
put a spoon in a glass before pouring hot water. Spoon is a good heat conductor. When hot water is poured, the spoon will also be doused and will deliver heat so that it will help spread the heat to the glass. Spoon absorbs heat and transmits heat to the glass surface better. Although sometimes this method is less effective because sometimes the glass still breaks.

2. Boil the glass.
Another way is to boil the glass. Soak the glass in a pan and then add water until the entire surface of the glass is submerged in water. Boil the glass for one to two hours then let it stand until cool by itself. That way, the glass will adapt to hot temperatures. The second method is quite effective to prevent it from breaking when pouring hot water.
Thus my writing about a broken glass when poured hot water may be useful for us all.
