For teachers like us, shaping student character is not an easy thing to achieve. However, it remains our duty to shape the character of the student, especially the discipline. Various efforts need to be done by teachers, such as getting to know our students more closely, their personality, and the background of the students' social life need to be well understood by the us. In addition, weshould also be able to know the learning styles and skills of our students so that they can easily develop any potential that exists within them.
Being a disciplined and responsible student is one of the goals in shaping the character of the student through every lesson that we teach to the students. Discipline behavior is one soft skill that must be mastered by students, teachers implant this skill indirectly through the interaction of teaching that takes place in the classroom. Thus, this skill is not in the cognitive domain of the student, but is part of the affective skills.
In my writing, as a teacher, I want to share some strategies that can be applied by me and other teachers to shape student:
1. Explain what students will learn.
Often, we see that teachers teach students something without explaining the urgency and purpose of a particular topic. In this case, it is as if what the teacher writes on the lesson plan and the syllabus belongs to the teacher himself without the need to explain to the student. This is something wrong, students need to be explained for each topic they learn, the goals, benefits and urgency of what they should learn, and what skills they have to master.
2. Involving students to create rules in the classroom
Before beginning the lesson at the beginning of the semester, the teacher should make a contract with his students in the class. The contract contains rules created and mutually agreed upon. Consequences for violations must also be approved by each student. That way, every student will be responsible for themselves, and this will lead the students to discipline with the rules that have been mutually agreed.
3. Involving parents in making decisions
Teachers also need to involve parents as partners in educating students for every decision they make. The role of the parent can occur in various forms, such as the teacher asking the opinion of the parents for each rule made, or the parents provide information about their children that need to be known by the teacher. Thus, every decision made becomes more effective to be applied, and can lead students to be descipline.
4. Assist students in planning changes in their behavior
when a student breaks the rules for several times that have been agreed upon, the teacher should help the student to plan changes in his behavior. Teachers can advise students on what to do, how and to when students should do it. Then, the teacher oversees the change in behavior, and can provide any other assistance that is deemed necessary for the student.
5. Give responsibility to the mischievous students
Punishment is not the only way to punish a naughty child in school. giving punishment are not always effective for students. In some cases, punishment has no effect on changes in student behavior, and often confrontation results from punishment. Therefore, to form the character of naughty students into discipline, the teacher can give responsibility to the student. By providing responsibilities such as additional assignments, students are required to be responsible through teacher supervision. Thus, their behavior will be more disciplined.
However, we have differents ways and strategies to educate our students, in shaping students' character particularly. I am waiting your ideas here of your teaching strategies for your students learning.

I agree with what you've stated here. But for me as a teacher in the impoverished townships where the learners' parents are illiterate, it is harder to foster discipline and building character this way. I am still struggling to find way of doing this effectively. Calling parents to school to discuss their children's performance and behaviour is mostly redundant. Most of them never come unless they come to complain about something a teacher did to their children.
Giving ill disciplined children more responsibilities is actually a good idea that I have tried a few times. At times it works with certain children and at other times it doesn't. This is where your point of knowing every child comes in. Building relationships with these children could also greatly assist in building character and fostering discipline.

I agree with your point that asking students' parents participation is difficult. That is also what I feel in my school. It needs huge efforts to do it. The school principal authority is needed, howeever, to deal with this problem. When we teach at remote areas, such this problem is mostly found by teacher where parents awareness is lack for students' education. Thank you @solomonsel for your ideas here!
