We learned a bit about robotics before and today we will have a look at a few robots that has been created be it for entertainment, for teaching, autonomous robots or humanoid robots.

An autonomous robot is a robot that performs behaviors or tasks with a high degree of autonomy.  A humanoid robot is a robot with its body shape built to resemble the human body. The design may be for functional purposes, such as interacting with human tools and environments

The first robot we will look at is a robot that was manufactured by Sony and is called Qrio.  This is a Japanese word meaning 'curiosity.  The robot is about 61 cm tall and its main purpose is to live with you and to make you happy and to entertain you.

This robot can stand up by itself if it have fallen over, it has joints above its feet to walk over uneven areas and it even has sensors on its feet so that it can play soccer with you.

HRP is a humanoid robot, which means it looks and moves a lot like a human.  The main reason why they produce these robots is to work in a job that humans do, interact with humans and can use tools to complete the job.  Of all the humanoid robots, this one is seen as the strongest and they can move on their own and work in different settings.  The robot is about 1.5 m tall and weighs about 58 kg.

ASIMO is a robot who's development already started in 1986 and has undergone a lot of changes.  It is a robot that is about 1.2 m tall and it is seen as the most advanced humanoid robot in the world.  It can do some ordinary tasks like switching on lights.  It can also climb stairs and make turns, recognize hand gestures, walk, run and carry objects.  This robot is manufactured by Honda.

ASIMO stands for: Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, it also takes its name from robotic visionary Isaac Asimov.

  • Do research on any 3 other robots that have been manufactured.  For each one make sure you know the name, how big it is and what it can do.
  • Choose the robot from the given information which is your favourite and give a reason why.
  • Design your own robot - you can make a drawing and say which features it will have.
  • Watch the video and answer the questions.

  1. What is the robot's name and what did he like to do?
  2. What did he realize after he walked a while?
  3. Who did he ask for help?
  4. What did the bird do with the bottom?
  5. Where did they go after they went to the bear?
  6. They confused a few things with the bottom.  Name them.
  7. Where did Bernard find his bottom?
