Hiya friends,
Today I have been on with another DIY project and it was pretty easy and you can all do it, all it takes is a little time a large wooden pallet some screws and a few hand tools. (I did how ever use a circular saw)
The hardest thing to do is take the pallet apart, it takes a little time and a little know how as you don't want to brake or split the wood.
I find it easier to hit the panels from the back and the nails come loose so I can get my claw hammer behind to prize them off.
Once the panels are off it is all about hitting the nails from the other side to get them out and then you have some wood, I was left with 7 good size planks that will do the trick.
The next job was to measure all the pieces to make sure that they were all the same length and width, you have to remember that pallet wood is the grot of all wood and who ever has sawed them has just done it without measuring or wood working skills.
I had to saw them down as they were cracked in places but my length of the wood measured 3ft long, I decided that I wanted the shelf to be about 2.5ft high so I cut the legs to that high.
Once I had the panels where I wanted them it was just drilling small 2mm pilot holes into the wood to make sure when screwing the wood didn't split.
I then used a screw driver to put my shelves in, there was equal distance between each shelfs, it was not a hard thing to do, I also used 2inch screws and a bit of wood glue to hold everything in place.
Now with it been pallet wood you have to make a choice, either leave the wood the way it was when it come off the pallet or sand and paint it. As this is going in my house I have made a choice to sand it down, the other problem I had was it had loads of holes in the wood from where nails and screws had been before so it was a case of filling them with filler.
Now the filler I used was for walls but if you want to save some money collect your saw dust and add a little bit of glue to it and fill in the holes, it is pretty much the easiest thing to do.
Now its just a little time to let the filler dry, once it is we will move on to stage too, which is sanding it down and giving it a paint.
I hope that you all liked this blog post and until next time
I absolutely love this sort of thing.. at the moment I am in love with scaffolding boards. I have two in the garden waiting to be made into rustic kitchen shelves (perhaps you could do a post on this :) and am constantly looking out for more for my kitchen breakfast bar! xx

Scaffolding boards are ace to use for upcycling as long as there is no colour on them as then they belong to a company and they can take you to court over having them, so just be a little careful.
I am in the middle of putting my kitchen together, before we lived her the plan was to do a cooking show on dtube, but we had to move out quick and this kitchen in this house is a bomb site.
the landlord only left us with bottom units in so I have a friend who is a kitchen fitter who is getting me some units to go up, I have a date of the 8th when they will be here. i can't wait as it is a long time coming.
I hope to do a daily show.
I have some ideas on making a some rustic kitchen shelves it would be easier with the longer beams than using pallets.
If I find some that don't belong to anyone I will definitely do a post. :D cheers for stopping by @lovewasted

Upcycling is boss and piles of shoes by the door sucks!
My only problem now is, after adding TWO shoe racks - my family seems to be collecting MORE shoes to pile around - DOH! ;-)
Great post, thanks!

lolz, sounds to me like you need to take them all to the carboot and get some money for them, when your family ask where their shoes are reply to them, I got a message from @artonmysleeve saying that to reduce the clutter from pile he recommended selling the shoes that didn't make it to the shoe rack. then I can take the blame for you :D

I only know basic woodworking skills from what I learned from school 20 years ago. so it is limited. I just try and try again and learn from my mistakes :D

lol, it's all about taking your time and making sure you measure twice and cut once. this took me longer than the fairy house to build and paint. it took me about 4 hours to sand it down with an electric sander. and to cut and measure that has probably took me another 3 hours or something haha

There is really a lot of things that can be done with pallets huh? It is so cool that you get to make all these good stuffs to organize your home in your own home with all the cool tools! :)

there is an amazing amount of stuff that can be done, next on the list of builds is a toilet roll holder. as my little 1 year old keeps putting them in the bath. haha

How hard is it to disassemble the pallets? I am thinking of making some bookshelves out of the ones we have in our yard.
Thanks for the inspiring post @artonmysleeve!!

Not hard at all, I have found a great youtube video that will help if you are using euro pallets it takes 10 minutes to take apart, if it is them other pallets it can take up to 30 minutes, I have got to the point where I just cut them and prize the middle nails up so it comes off, I loos about 2 inch doing it that way though.
youtube video here
this is not my video, I am just using it for a reference. :D
