The problem here again is double-sided: philosophical and and scientific. Philosophically, the problem of the origin of life does not present any prominent difficulties. The soul as the ultimate principle of life cannot have its origin in matter, for then, it would exclude itself as a constituent principle of life. The soul then has to find its origin from above, from an intelligent being. How this intelligent being gave origin to the soul as the life principle remains a debatable matter, on which the last word has not been said. Scientifically, geologists, reconstructing the history of the earth along its broad outlines, have demonstrated that in the Azoic era there was no trace of life. In the period immediately following, the most ancient living things appeared, such as unicellular bacteria and afterward – suddenly – almost all kids of inferior organisms. The last of Azoic era is proved by recognizing that, in those distance period of time, life on earth was just not possible. Whatever theory one accepts concerning the origin of our planet, it is necessary to admit that the cross of the earth was once incandescence, and this state of incandescence is incompatible with any form of life whatsoever. Life on earth, therefore, at one time did not exist, but then it suddenly appeared. Consequently, the problem of its origin arises: where does life comes from? Four possible answers have been offered:
- The direct creation of the soul by God;
- Evolution according to the plan established by God;
- Spontaneous generation;
- Generation or evolution by pure chance.
Direct creation and evolution have been have accepted by many since the era of the mythical explanation of the universe. Darwin attributed to the direct action of God, the origin of four or five living prototypes which subsequently evolved.
The theory of spontaneous creation states that life traces its origin from the spontaneous transformation of inert matter into living matter. It first appeared at the beginning of the era of modern philosophy. At first theology was in agreement. Scientific experimentation subsequently showed that this was completely groundless and it was subsequently abandoned.
In the past two centuries, the theory of generation of life from matter by chance has proposed and re-proposed by various scientist. In brief, its states that through a casual combination of chemical elements, the first living cell form itself; a genetic code for by series of DNA molecules was immediately stabilized for it, a code which has definitely sealed the transmission of life. Its further explain the distinction between all living things by chance, edit by natural selection. One of the most famous proponents of this theory is the French Biologist Jacques Monod. A change explanation of the origin of life has two loopholes:
First to take refuge in chance to explain something is nothing more to refuse to give an explanation. To say “I broke a glass by chance”, in responds to the question” who broke the glass?” is an uncalled for answer.
Secondly it is absurd that from chance, that is, from irrationality, the rational has its origin. How does one account for the appearance of a rational being, man, through evolution?
Between direct creation on the part of God and the origin of life by pure chance or spontaneous generation, there is a middle road: that of a programmed evolution, which is professed by many Christians authors. Evolution realizes itself according to a program pre-established by God and God has establish that from the forces which matter was originally gifted with, life should develop from matter at a certain moment.
