One of my students emailed me today to tell me that her mom died. Her mom had been sick for quite a while. She had cancer and there was nothing more that they could do for her. They had been expecting this for a while now.
Kaylin is a strong individual. At first she did not want any of us to know about her mom's illness and kept it a secret for many months. About three months ago I started to notice that she was not the talkative friendly teenager she once was. I asked her if anything was wrong and she assured me that everything was fine. I know kids...and I knew that she was not telling the truth.
A few days later I sent her a text message on her phone, and then she told me. I was sad with her but I knew that there was absolutely NOTHING that I could do for her. Over the past few weeks I have helped her prepare for the worst and encouraged her in every possible way that I could, but HOW do you prepare someone for the death of their mom?
She phoned me yesterday to tell me that she was not going to be at school today....she had to visit her mom in hospital. It was then that I knew that the end was near....
When a mother dies it is part of you that is gone forever. Her lifeline is no longer there...in time she will start to accept this because life goes on and she is young, but the one being that gave her life is no longer with her.
I am sad today...I am sad for all the lives that are lost to this terrible disease called cancer. I am sad for all the children that must grow up without their mothers. I am sad today...and if I am sad I think, and this is exactly what I did today....
We are often so busy that we don't really see what goes on around us. We are so busy in our daily lives that we often forget this statement: "Stop and smell the roses!"
We rush through the day and we forget the things that are important to us. We leave our hopes and dreams behind and we fight to stay alive. We don't have enough money to provide us with the necessities and many of us have to find an extra job just to get through the month. In the meantime things that are important get lost. We don't have enough time to spend with our kids, with our partners and then one day when we finally wake up it is too late and our children are grown up and we are left alone.
Life passed us by without us really living!
Take time today...stop with whatever you are doing, make time to look around you and if you see a rose in any form today...
Thank you for your post@giantbear. Sorry to hear about all the sadness that is surrounding both of you. Only God can heal the broken harts. it will not be easy, and she will never forget but slowly she will heal. thank you fore reminding us to make time for our friends and family, cause tomorrow is not promised.

This is so sad, but you wrote an excellent post, it is often the sad things that help us to be extra creative. Very good reminder to not let life pass us by. Also make time for spiritual matters and make sure where we will spend eternity.

so sorry for your student :( it's really sad to think about someone so young who must grow up without their mom :( Yes, this terrible fact make us think about life and about the importance of little things... I'm with you: MAKE THE TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES.

My mom passes away on Monday morning. Totally unexpected. Blood sugar.
I can totally relate to this article where you say take the time to smell the roses and TELL the people in your life how much you care about them and love them.
Don't wait, do it now! Forgive and love.

You are so right in that we often don't appreciate what we have at the present moment. In order to live a full life we need to be more present in the now. I am sorry about your student's mother. It is such an especially devastating blow in a young person's life, losing a mother so young. You must have been so comforting to your student during a time when it is so hard. You are a wonderful teacher noticing that one of your students was withdrawn. You did a very special thing. Thank-you for sharing this heart felt post.
