Winter Cleaning On Steemit

It's Time To Do A Little Housekeeping
In my morning routine of setting up the @qurator newsletter edition, I came across a post by @themarkymark and his response to a fellow steemian questioning how to make money on steemit. OK.. let's see what he had to say. After reading it (which I kind of already knew about being consistent, persistent and dedicated) I took away from the post that I may be cluttering my feed and missing out on some GREAT posts and steemians.
So, me being me, I decided today I will slowly start de-cluttering and downsizing my following.
I am still following MANY members from day one and it may be hurting me instead of helping me.
@themarkymark had a post about an entirely different topic, but, me being an over-analytical person, I read into it more. After all, there's more to read than just the surface and headline.
@themarkymark's response about followers:
Following 32,000 people is problem number 1. You just absolutely destroyed your feed. There is no way to make sense of anything at that level. I am very selective who I follow, I like my feed to represent things I care about and am interested in, not a firehose of everything posted to Steemit
Yes, I need to harness my "firehouse"!
It's time to rid my feed of steemians that don't share common interests or are posting fluff 'n stuff.

Steemit's Homesteaders Online

@pennsif's post featuring a list of current homesteaders on steemit has almost 300! WOW! That's unbelievable!
But after going through the complete list, I see that some haven't posted in quite some time; months even. But, being a true homesteader and committed member to the homesteadersonline group and community, I just can't axe them... yet.
I mean, they may come back. This is the slower season when it comes to homesteading and gardening. Right?
So I will do a second sweep of the list come April and May of 2018.

Using Dead Followers
There is a website called dead followers that you can see who you follow and when his or her last post was.
NOW.. keep in mind, they may still be active with UPvoting and making comments, they just aren't making there own posts; so be careful here!
Looks like about 24% of my following is D-E-A-D!
Here is just a sample of my account...
1474 Total followers
373 Dead followers
1101 True followers

The website lists your followers alphabetically and with the longest NOT posting first. If you look at mine, @aceton has NOT posted in FOREVER! Ok, yeah, that one's got to go.

How about you? Have you ever swept away and stopped following some people? Why?

Lol Problems to have on the Steemit platform!
Too funny. 8-P

Yeah your comment was in the right place, but who cares. All that we hope is that you will find more people interested to that topics to be in trending page. Because everything here is related to social aspect, we have here more people talking about crytp world so we will have in trending people that talk about it, if you and your friends work hard on inviting more people that are interested to your topic to your community also will be in trending page. Because I know Jerry he mostly promote steemit as a good income so this why mostly we have people here interested about money. And not just Jerry all people are crazy about money that steemit gives, in the future when we will be whealthy enough, I think we can spend some money advertising steemit as well like Jerry do. ☺

Even though still very new to the community I have started implementing random cleanings. I read similar advice around day 3 of being on here. It basically said "only follow people who post about stuff you want to read" I went through my vast list of the 50! people I was following (😂) and saw the error of my ways already developing. I then went through and scanned all of the accounts, which luckily was still a small number, and unfollowed the "random" accounts I had followed. Going forward, I will continue to browse their feed and make selective decisions of who to follow. This way I canhopefully have more meningful interactions on here. Merry Christmas!
And Yes, it is a very slow time of the year for homesteading! Lots of firewood burning is about all ;)

Excellent to do early on. I've only been here just over five months and it appears I was a little over-zealous early on.

Ha! Great motto! "Live and learn... the delete!" Really!? Only 5 months!? Wow! By your content and knowledge I would have guessed much longer. Good on you! And hey; I just read one of your re-steemed intros, was great. Thanks for sharing those! Is a good way to find new quality people. I need to do my intro post soon....

Thank you! And yes... joined July 13 but I was a writer/journalist and ghost writer in another lifetime, in a land far, far away-lol
Anything you need, or question just ask away!
I love sharing new steemians with my following! And there's a newer account called @welcoming that resteems new introduceyourself posts that are good quality. They kinda filter out the others and share the good ones for us.

Oh cool @goldendawne! I am tempted to dig through some of my old journals and see what I wrote years ago when I was a jaded teen...then again, maybe not Haha!
If you have the time and interest (and I am not looking for any upvotes!) would you be willing to look trough a few of my posts and let me know any thoughts. In particular what would catch your eye and what you would like to see more of. I am still searching for my "voice" on here. I am passionate about homesteading and conservation, but my interests run a lot wider than that.
Thank you in advance!!!

I try to clean my list at least once a month, I figure if they come back and start posting I will start following them again, till then they are just eating real estate on my feed, I do the same for those who mute, those are unfollowed right away. And I don't do the f4f...

That's a good idea to do every month. Once I get the main part of it done, I'm going to try and do a monthly sweep too.
Despise the f4f comments, never really did that that I can remember.

I don't follow a whole lot of people because the posts of my real followers would be lost with so many, so good idea!! Merry Christmas eve my darling friend❤️🎁🎁

In the beginning I did because I was thinking, "If I follow people of different interests then it will give me and allow me more exposure" but now... yeah, it's time to restructure some things

Hmmm, I didn't know there was a website that listed followers by the last time they posted. I would suspect that a good 10% of the people who followed me are no longer active, and I'm sure there are people who I followed who are no longer active. I'll have to check that out.
That was pretty interesting. There are more than 300 of my followers that haven't voted or posted in at least a month, some a lot longer.

Yeah I knew about this website months ago, but never really ventured there too often.
I wasn't surprised by the 24% for me though. It seems people come, expect quick $$, then leave when it doesn't happen immediately.

Happy Christmas @goldendawne and thank you for the mention of the list.
Yes I'm hoping a few of the missing homesteaders will come back - some have already. Maybe the rising price of steem will entice a few more...
