The Pig Who Thought She was a Puppy - A Story about Being Yourself

On a farm there once lived a family who had pigs, chickens, horses, and two dogs.

But the funny thing about one of the dogs was she wasn’t a dog at all. She was a baby pig. Instead of rolling around in the mud and eating from a trough like the other pigs, she would eat from a dog bowl and track mud in the house. She wanted to be Sadie's friend, so she pretended to be a dog.

The family dog, Sadie, didn’t mind having Teacup the pig as her sister because she thought she was a dog as well; Teacup really fooled Sadie. She would do what Sadie did: wag and chase her tail, drink from a water bowl, chase after a ball, and eat dog treats for tricks. They were like two peas in a pod and loved each other dearly.

One afternoon, when walking the prairie alone, Sadie saw a breed that looked like Teacup, so she walked over to the pig pen and started talking to the pigs to learn more about her.

“What breed of dog are you?” Sadie asked with curiosity.

“I am not a dog like you. I’m a pig.” the mother pig said dignified.

“Oh, you just remind me of someone I know. But I could be mistaken.”

Then Sadie was telling her stories how Teacup and she were on a road trip to the park to the mother pig, how they chased ducks by the lake, caught frisbees in their mouths, and played tug-o-war against each other.

Eventually, the mother pig grew appalled at what she was hearing and blurted out the truth to Sadie, “She isn’t a dog. She is a pig. She shouldn’t be doing those things.”

“What! That can’t be! I’ll go ask her.” Sadie yelped.

Sadie dashed into the house through the dog door and saw Teacup sleeping on their doggy bed.

“Hey, Teacup. Wake up! I need to ask you something important!”

Teacup snored and grunted as she woke up, “What is it Sadie?” she said grumpily.

“The pigs told me you aren’t a dog, is this true?

Teacup’s eyes went to the floor and finally admitted the truth about who she was, “Yes I am a pig, but I only pretended because I wanted you to like me.”

“Oh, Teacup that’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard! You don’t have to be someone else for me to like you. I would have liked you if you were a dog or not.”

Sadie found out that her sister wasn’t a dog at all, she was a pig. She didn’t care if her sister was a pig, or a horse, or a chicken, just that she was herself.

Sadie and Teacup still had lots of fun together, but she returned to doing pig things as well, like rolling around in the mud, but she still traipsed mud through the kitchen floor, just like Sadie.

Be true to who you are because in the end a mask can only be worn for so long until we find out who is under it.

Powerful story. We all pretend to be somebody else so we can belong at sometime in our lives. Time to just relax and be who you are.

You write such nice stories and the lessons is really something that can benefit all kids

hehe that's an interesting story to read :D

Amazing story loved it so much thanks a lot for sharing.

Awesome analogy. It is very true that people have a tendency to wear a mask. Especially online, since everyone seems to be more worried about branding themselves than being themselves.

We all have ups and downs, different interests, good days and bad. Roll with them, and don't lose yourself in the mix trying to impress people. You will never impress them all! 😊

Despite finding out who teacup is, it didn't change the way Sadie felt. In real sense, we should learn to accept people for who they are. A lot of persons wants to be like you cos they love the way you do thing. Our duty is not to judge them but encourage them to be themselves. Valuable lesson learnt today

Very true. Pretence takes a lot of work. You have to make sure your don't make mistakes in your story, you don't break character... Men that's hard work. Be yourself.

At the end, it is the people who accept you for who you are, who really want your best interests. There are the true friends. No one should pretend to be who or what they are not. It can only take one so far before he or she is caught.

Very educative story there @hopehuggs

The story is very interesting, it teach not to lie about who you are, appreciate yourself, some may hate you for live if they eventually know you are lying.

"Yeah, we all wear the mask, but how long will it last?!"

Awesome story the way you explained is awesome.great to read these.

Identity crisis! Be yourself. Sometimes people try to be who they are not. Nicely said through the story, @hopehuggs.

@hopehuggs you see the kind of association we belong to matters alot both in humans and animals folks. may be the pig loved and appreciate the kind of live the dogs display more than it kind.

Particularly love this story never mind its dog or pig.

so sorry it really looks like that, btw awesome story with such detail explanation.

Good afternoon! I really like your stories, they always have an appeal. When you read your stories, there is always something to think about. Read the stories easily and at ease. I liked this story as much as others. In the end, a very important problem of modernity is revealed, many are hidden behind masks. But you always need such as you are to remain. Be happy and do not hide behind masks!

Very good interpretation of a real life issue...the mask...is sometimes a mistake or a help...depends who is using it...the story is really cool !

It is so important to stay true to yourself, seems easy but sometimes it is hard, trying to please others and losing yourself in the process. Great story, my girls will love this. Thanks @hopehuggs.

That's a very good story to teach on identity to kids these days, especially with all that is going on, the world can be a rather daunting and confusing place for a child.

Such a wonderful story,thanks a lot.
