Today was a long day.
I always work 7 days a week and that includes holidays. Holidays are particularly busy at restaurants and Memorial Day is no exception.
The worst thing about holidays is the fact that people like to bring their kids out.
I have no problem with kids but kids mean highchairs and ours are made from extraordinarily heavy oak. When you've got a thousand things on your plate and a ten top walks in with six kids that need high chairs that are made from very heavy wood you just want to say Well Crap.
That's okay though.
People have long days and we get through them.

When work was over I waited at my local Chinese food place for about 20 minutes to get some General Tso's Chicken.
I love the General Tso's chicken there.
Fried pieces of chicken covered in peanuts in a delicious sauce over a bed of broccoli and red hot peppers. Served with two big dollops of fried rice.
Imagine my disappointment when I got home to see that there was no broccoli, no red peppers, and no peanuts. Just chicken and rice. Lame.
Of course the real disappointment started when the internet went out.
When I walked in my front door I noticed that there was a guy from Spectrum outside working on the line.
Since my internet was working, I didn't pay much attention to it. I simply started watching Hell's Kitchen and eating my food.
Halfway through, Hell's Kitchen stopped playing. I waited for about 10 minutes while I did random things around the house. The internet did not come back up.
I chatted with the guy from Spectrum who claimed that everything would come back up soon.
I waited another 10 minutes but nothing happened. I was beginning to get frustrated. I have emails to send and things to do online.
I went to talk to him again but he assured me that everything was going to be fine very shortly.
I was about to take a shower but I just decided instead to stand on my front porch while flipping through a book.
I'm glad that I did that because I noticed the Spectrum guy loading up his van and I stopped him one final time.
"Hey man, things still aren't working..... is everything okay?" I asked him.
"Everything's working now, it's hot and I'm going home." he replied.
I told him that my internet wasn't working but he assured me that I was wrong and that it actually is working.
He asked me to reset my router, which I did. He then asked me to reset it again, which I did. Again.
He finally came and stood next to my router with me, staring at it. He was hoping that the two lights that were blinking would eventually become five.
They never did.
After about 10 minutes he finally made a huge sigh as I explained to him that there must be something wrong inside the box that needed fixing out there.
Grabbing his tools he clunked out there and took the box back apart. After about 10 minutes he found the wire that wasn't connected correctly and caused the link to work again.
Ultimately he thanked me for stopping him because he knew he would have had to come back tomorrow if he hadn't fix it right today.
I'm glad that I spoke up, and I'm glad that I didn't just hop in the shower but instead stood by the front door watching to make sure that he didn't leave.
You've really got to pay attention to what's happening around you.
Sometimes you've just got to speak up.
When the day ends on a high note, the whole day goes into the green. :-)

That's for sure. It could have ended on a much worse note.

Thank you for your post! I work as a housekeeper and I can sympathize with the added element of kids to an already toppling workload, for me it's the candy stuck on carpets, the fingerprints on the Windows, but there was this cute little girl I saw today, she was beautiful like a queen, and as I felt myself intimidated by the wisdom she was, imagining her like a dragon of mystical and elegant power, she said hi to me. That was a high note for me today. I'm sorry your shit wasn't working but you have great advice, it's always better to keep your awareness high. Thanks, and cheers from a former restaurant employee, I remember those heavy things. You are my hero for this post, down to earth and what the hell is really up, it's refreshing.

Thank you. Occasionally I will write these types of posts but I usually write Fiction. It's nice when you see a young person that carries themselves well. Working is tough but I have to remind myself that it's tough wherever you go.

While reading, I got stressed for you to be without internet! But now I'm thinking sometimes it's good to detox from technology (well, not when you have to send emails and work with it)

It's kind of funny how Reliant we are in technology. Having no internet is absolutely mind boggling and having no cell phone is equally terrible. I would like to go live in the woods for a week just to be away from it for a while.
