Vocational guidance seems to be, at first glance, a task for schools and, certainly most schools have well-structured programs of vocational guidance, or at least different activities aimed at guiding children and teens in the decision-making necessary to discover their true vocation. However, parents are really the first educators and counselors, so vocational guidance must start very early. Parents can and should observe the development of their children's tastes and abilities. By knowing them, they can help their children in the future to choose the profession that fills them and leads them to success.
Some of the aspects that should be worked at home are:
OBSERVATION: see what they like to do, to play, what qualities or characteristics arise from their personality, tastes, and dislikes. Everything is important. Each discipline has room for different personalities and tastes. As our children grow, new skills and tastes develop, and they often discover what they want to be and do in their adult life. However it is not always so. Parents can help in that discovery.
DIALOGUE: Time we share with our children is vital not only to strengthen ties as a family and to enjoy our role as parents, but to guide them on their journey to adulthood. Especially when reaching adolescence, and although sometimes their attitudes seem to tell they do not need us, our presence and accompaniment in this transition to adult life is very important.

As parents, It is very important that our children choose a career they really like and not the one we want them to like, either by family tradition, or by continuity in a business. It is not enough that a career catches their attention because vocation goes further. The chosen career must have qualities that would make them work with love and efficiency. Many teenagers start a career in college and soon take a new one because they realized the first one did not fill their expectative, wasting time and money. Just because various reasons, different to their vocation, led them to a wrong choice. Parents can and should help bringing this process to a successful conclusion.
Career choice is not just about what university would they like to study at, or what subjects are to be seen, the point is that the career they will choose is the basis of lifetime work activity, so they are not choosing a study program, but their way of life.
RESEARCHING: Parents do not know everything, but can accompany children in the investigation task about the career that catches their attention or careers that could be adapted to their tastes and abilities. The web for this has infinite resources. Let's take our time to accompany them in this discovery process.
RESOURCES: Choosing the ideal career must also take into account available resources. Although it should be part of family planning, expenses in higher education can easily exceed the capabilities. In many cases it will be necessary to move to other s tates or even other countries. If the budget and resources available to the teenager do not allow for the moment the choice of a specific study program,a related career could be a solution, in a University or Institute within reach, or combining studies with a job, thus allowing the necessary resources completion.
