My Great Grandmother's Spelling Book From 1908

in steemiteducation •  7 years ago  (edited)

It's interesting what books you can find on the shelves of your grandparents, or if you are lucky to know them your great grandparents. A very long time ago my great grandmother lived with us for the last seven years of her life. She had a lot of very old books and as a youngster I enjoyed reading through her collection.

After She Died I Inherited Many of These Books Including An Old Spelling Book From 1908

The Elementary Spelling book is one of my great grandmother's old books. She was born in 1909. This book was published in 1908. I don't know if it was her school book or if it belonged to a relative or someone who lived in her town. I know sometimes mothers passed on their school books to their children so some books were used by families for many years. She grew up in Butler, TN which was a very small and isolated town back in the early 1900s. In the 1948 the population was around 600 people so I image earlier in time the population was smaller.

Old Writing In The Book (Maybe A Child Died?)

J.P. Vanderventer Aug 24th 1930
JP Vanderventer Dide May The 201 27 1933

This one page is very curious. Back in my great grandmother's day it was common to write down birth and death dates in Bibles. My family even has an old Bible from the early 1900s with birth, death, and marriage dates in the cover. I wonder who J.P. Vanderventer was and if he died very young? I wonder if it was a child who wrote this in their school book and they did it because they were sad and were copying the tradition of writing birth/death dates in an important book? My dad knows the history of the town very well so next time I see him I'll have to ask if he recognizes the name.

It's interesting to be able to look at book that is around 109 years old to see how school children were taught spelling. From a little research this particular book was written by Noah Webster who authored Webster's Dictionary.

An Important Book In Educating Children In The Late 1800s and Early 1900s

This one book had over 385 editions in Webster's life and changed names a few times until it became The Elementary Spelling Book. This book was one of the most popular spelling books used for over 100 years. This book was responsible for teaching children spelling in the United States for the nations first century. The money Webster made from this one book helped support him in writing many other books and helped in the creation of contests like Spelling Bees.

So Much History In One Little Spelling Book!

Do you own any old books?

Wow! That is really cool. We homeschool using a curriculum that uses classical literature, so we have a few older books. I always love the way they smell. Some are falling apart! Thanks for sharing this. Looks like a great book to hang on to. Did you check the value on ebay? I always like to do that just to see!

WOW!!! How fun is this :) That is a really neat find .. Maybe you will find some other GREAT books as well .. The condition of this book is really good still for being that old .. Thanks for sharing!! SUNSHINE247

It really is in great shape. I have a number of really great old books. This one by far is the oldest though.

Just wonderful - maybe you will be able to post some of the other ones you found also - Fun find!!!! SUNSHINE247

Really cool.

I have a first edition of Conan Odoyle from Sherlock Holmes first edition scarlet red letter and first edition of huckleberry Finn, they are in excellent condition and I'm thinking of selling them, I also have a very cool cookbook from 1783 that I bought in a garage sale forty years ago for a dollar, I have them over my bed on a shelf with old buttons and old thread and needles, I do love my books! Have a great night 😊I'll get closer to my goal to having my scooter if I sell them

Those sound like really neat books! It would be a shame if you had to sell them but I understand why you need a scooter more. I hope you reach your goal!

What a cool book to have and someday pass down to your kids!!!

I have quite a few cool books to pass down. I hope my daughter loves history as much as me to appreciate it.

You have got to be kidding me!!! 1908?? Now thats incredible...

Great keepsake! It's especially interesting to see how the material is presented.

It is. I have a few spelling books from when I was a kid and they are so very different. Kids back then didn't have all the pictures and words.

Wow - what a gem you have there! Am I a terrible person for only being able to think of the irony in the misspelled "dide" in the spelling book? Yes, I'm a terrible person. Ack!

It took me a second when I saw the word to realize they meant "died." That's why I think it might have been a kid to misspell the word. I do think I'll check out some records from the old town to see who the person is. It will be an interesting search.

I just love to wax nostalgia like this. Recently I read my grandmother's copy of The Grapes of Wrath (signed and dated by her 1940) and her copy of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea(copyright 1917).
How many people have enjoyed these books? How many times did my grandmother read them? There certainly is more to an old book than the words on the paper...

Somewhere I have an old copy of Shakespeare's Macbeth that belonged to my great grandmother. I can't remember the year but it's a pretty old copy. I also have a complete set of the 1952 The Book of Knowledge (encyclopedia's) that were hers. I remember in high school before the internet I used to use them to write reports. I love finding old writing in the margins. Makes you wonder about the person who wrote the words.

Whhen you think of the many trips that book has had to and from school istuffed in various bags etc it is in amassing condition.
If only it could tell the stories of its life, what a great read it would be.

It really is in great condition. It's been in storage around 17 years in boxes of my stuff. I'm surprised it looks so good considering the age.

This was awesome I really love old books. Have books from way back. They are all so beautiful.
