Sharpen the Addition Skills By Adding Doubles

In this post we will start the very basic math operation of addition. In third grade math kids build up addition skills over what they have learned in second grade about addition. My emphasis is always on tricks which can be processed in mind to quickly come with the answer. For addition the simplest is to add the number to itself or we call it adding doubles.

For example; 1 + 1 = 2 or 5 + 5 = 10.

There is a huge advantage of knowing this skill as it sharpen child's brain to do either big number addition without counting on fingers. For example, if a student knows that 6 + 6 = 12, this student can easily find that 6 + 7 = 13 because 6 + 7 is actually 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13. 

Below is the worksheet to practice this skill. It is very important that kids know the double addition of one digit numbers i.e. answer for 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8 and 9+9. But smart kids don't stop just double addition of one digit numbers but to move forward to memorize double addition of two digit numbers.
