FUND RAISING WITH A BAZAAR AND RUN.

We do a lot of school functions at the school to raise funds, because it is very important to get extra teachers to make the classes smaller.

I have written about the golf day, the maths Olympics, but nothing makes more money than this bazaar and 5km run we have every three years.

It is a lot of planning and hard work before the time but it definitely worth it.

We start the day with a run, where the primary school children have an advantage of 500 metres against the grownups and high school children.

We start by giving any and everyone who is interested, as the parents and children who has left the school all love this day and want to participate.

They all get a form on which they are either sponsored per km or some of the businesses just give them a big amount and it is over with. They have to get the form, from the school with the school stamp on and my signature as principal.

The reason being, that we number them and know exactly who has got what.

We even have people in wheel chairs who join in for the fun as it is called a fun bazaar day.

The children drive their parents crazy, as we only sell homemade baking at this bazaar. Even people from other towns come as the cakes and things are of the highest quality.  No parent wants to look bad, when they bake and always try to overdo it.

This was very nice for us because it meant we had a lot of things to sell.

When all was organised and a date set. We worked very hard that day.

First it was the run, and when all had finished, the first three, no matter small or grownup the first three win.  They all get a medal namely gold, bronze and, silver. This is the start of the bazaar; it is the most fun ever.

We had lots of mining people, but we also had a lot of farmers.

The farmers were always very loyal and always gave us some lambs and pigs as well as one ox to braai on spi

All the different butcheries lent us spits to use for the day and the younger teachers really worked hard at doing their best to braai the best meat ever.

We had people coming from all over as they knew there was a lot of food and we charged R50 per grownup and R20 per child. They could eat as much as they wanted.

Some of the mothers who were not bakers use to make big bowls of salad and this was served with the meat. It was absolute incredible to see the fun they had.

We had everything on the rugby field. Tables and chairs where they could eat, all the tables where we were selling all the things the mothers baked.

And believe me some of the best puddings you could find anywhere in the world as South African woman do know how to cook and make wonderful food.

Then in one side of the rugby field we had games for the children, like who could skip the longest. Who could through rings over a pole the best and lots of other games?  The children had brought all the stuff that their parents did not want any more as prizes at these games. Things like old toys, ashtrays, glasses you name it they gave it as prizes.

There was even a fishing competition with magnets for the children, and they were laughing like mad trying to catch a fish with a magnet.

I cannot tell you how wonderful these days went and we just made money all the time.

Some of the children who had left school before came back as they only had two of these days in their time. See we only did this every third year.

It was like a reunion to them as they saw children that had gone to other schools and they all came here.

So the fact that this day had a lot of work made it all worthwhile as everyone enjoyed it and the money we made covered 4 teachers’ salaries for a year.

This was wonderful to me as it meant that the classes could be smaller and children got better educated as there was enough time to spend with every child.

We use to send out a thank you to all and we placed a thank you in the local paper as well to tell everyone exactly what we had made.

There was only one secretary that worked with the money.  She worked for days on end to get everything sorted. I still take my hat off to her as she was excellent.

I can assure you that doing this fundraising was a very big job.  I will always remember it but it was one  of the most difficult ones to organise.
