One year we took the children to Waterval Boven it is a very beautiful place with a lovely waterfall.
This was one of the places that we use to take the children to field school.
My son who is now a grown man with two children always say that it is one of the most enjoyable places he ever went.
He discovered there that he really loves the wild rather than the ocean.
The fact that they could swim in the river and see that wonderful waterfall made them all very happy.
One of the teachers who were a bit of a joker took a tape recorder with, and on it he had recorded the most terrible sound of lions roaring.
The children did not know that there were no lions and they all slept in tents.
We use to make an enormous fire at night that we kept going just to let the children think that it would keep the wild animals away.
These were only boys we took and they had a lot of fun. They made fires every night for us to braai and they had to help make food as there were no girls there.
We use to put potatoes in foil and put them on the fire as well as a lot of salads, which taught the boys how to make salad.
It is important to teach boys how to make food and today my son is one of the best “braaiers” that I know as he has made it into a wonderful experience.
I am still sure this is where he got his love for doing it.
When we had problems getting the boys to bed, this teacher would switch on the tape and say you better get into your tents as I hear lions roaring.
They moved like you would not believe to get into their tents.
Later on they would come and sit by the fire as they knew it was safe.
My son told me when we got back that this was one of the best experiences he had ever had as living outside and seeing the wonderful nature and living under the stars made him realize how great God really is.
He said it was the first time that this had really sunk in as we took our children to church every Sunday, but living out there made it real to him.
He told me that he would sit and watch the wonderful waterfall and realise that this did not just happen; this was all the work of God.
I am truly glad that he had this experience as this is still something that he remembers from his childhood and he does the same with his children.
I do not know if they still have these school outings for 10 days but to me it taught children a lot about life and how wonderful the planet is we live on.
We always took the children in their last year at primary school and that even prepared them for the new school that is lying ahead.
Children who are the oldest in school can think that they are very important, and then when they move on they have to start at the bottom again.
That is exactly how life works. Once you think you are at the top, something happens and you have to start something new, this taught them that they can overcome any difficulty by just being kind and realizing that other people are just as important as they are.
Have a wonderful day from me at the Wild Coast and be happy.
This is a great theme.
