Art Lesson: How to Draw a 3D box

in steemiteducation •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is a lesson my grandfather taught me as a boy and I always remembered it because I thought how cool it was to be able to draw something that looked 3D.

Pictures and Video from youtube.com

Instructions:

  1. Draw a square
    box1.jpg

  2. Draw three equal lines at a 45 degree angle from the top corners and one bottom side corner of the square
    box2.jpg

  3. Draw two lines connecting the three lines, one horizontal and one vertical
    box3.jpg

  4. Draw one more vertical as shown in the corner
    box4.jpg

  5. Add shade and shadow by considering the location of a light source

Adding shade and shadow really gives the drawing the 3D look and makes it jump off the page.

This basic lesson will help students development concepts of drawing in 3D which can be carried over into more complex drawing and art.

I've seen it with making 2 L's and connecting them. I think that's how I learned to do this kind of #drawing. The #kids would like to learn this, I bet! Need to show them and have them practice! Thanks for sharing the post.

Thank you @apanamamama it's a good fun start to 3d drawing.

I failed a whole technical drawing exam as a teenager (only one I've ever failed) because I couldn't get my head around drawing 3 D boxes with segments etc cut out. Could have done with reading this then, but alas that was more than 20 years ago ;) A hi from #theunmentionables

I will try this! Thanks!

Cool.

It takes some practice to draw three-dimensional drawings, or draw "as you see it". @ironshield

Yeah, it took me a while to realize what I really see compared to what I think I see.

I've always enjoyed these tutorials on basic drawing techniques. Sometimes you forget to go back and look at those first steps -- thanks!
