Measuring the depth of the sea

Hello Steemian
We can find out the different lengths by measuring using the bar or ruler. We can measure the length of the road by using the number of wheels at times with the circumference of the wheel. But have we ever imagined how to measure the depth of the sea? Do you use a long stick or dive while carrying rope? Even though we know that the oceans on the surface of the earth are very wide and spread in various directions. The depth of the ocean varies from one location to another. There is a shallow sea and a deep sea. How do you calculate the depth of the seabed?

Sea depth measurement method

There are at least two methods that can be used to calculate the depth of the seabed, namely the lead pendulum technique (drad loading) and the technique of guessing echoes or echo sounding.
Let's look at these two techniques.

1. Black Lead Pendulum Technique
Measuring the depth of the sea using lead pendulum is the most traditional technology. The tin pendulum technique is an ancient technique for measuring the depth of the sea using a long rope tied to the lead as a ballast. By using a ship, the rope is lowered until it touches the seabed and then the length of the rope is measured and the measurement results will be known later.
This technique certainly has many weaknesses.
For example, when the pendulum is considered to touch the seabed, it has not yet arrived, but only concerns objects on the seabed. Another weakness is the difficulty with the strong sea currents under the sea. this complicates careful sea measurement techniques.
But as an initial technique, of course this can provide benefits for the community in his time. Of course we now have modern technology that helps make ocean depth measurements easier.

2. Echo sounding
This technique is a modern method based on the laws of physics regarding the laws of propagation or reflection of sound in water. The sound waves are released from a device mounted on a ship that has an average propagation speed of 1,600 meters per second in water until it will reach the ocean floor.

Sound waves will later touch the sea floor and bounce back in the form of echoes and captured through a device mounted on the bottom of the ship. Echo is the same as when you shout in the mountains or in a wide field, then in a few seconds your voice will be heard again. The time interval required for propagation and reflection can be interpreted as sea depth.
As explained in physics the formula for finding the depth of the sea through the conjecture echo method is:
D = ½ (v x t)
with
D = sea depth
v = speed of sound in water
t = propagation time

Example:
An echosounder records the time required for alternating propagation is 2 seconds and the speed of sound in the sea is 1,600 m per second. What is the depth of the ocean?

D = ½ (v x t)
D = ½ (1,600 x 2)
D = ½ x 3,200
D = 1,600 m

So the depth of the ocean is 1,600 meters.
This reverberation technique is certainly more practical because it does not have to drop the pendulum and extend the rope like the lead pendulum technique. Now we can know the depth of the sea only by detecting the time of sound reflection from this modern device.
Thus my writing this time about measurement into the sea may be useful for us all.
