Sounds at night are heard more clearly than in Daytime
Hi Steemian how are you? Hopefully healthy and creative work.
The ear is our sense of hearing. We can hear sounds because there are sound sources, there are mediums and there are those that listen. The sounds we hear will have different volumes. This means that there are sounds that are heard clearly and some that are not clear. Sometimes when we speak it is not clear so we need to shout a little. But at other times we whisper can also be heard by others.
This also happens in our everyday lives. Even though our house is quite far from the station, at night we often hear the sound of trains. both the roar of the engine or the horn sounded when departing or entering the station. In fact, this will be very different during the daytime. During the day we cannot hear it clearly.
We can also hear the ocean waves of the Indian Ocean which is about 20 kilometers at night but is not heard during the day.
Another example is when going to an open place in the wild, at night you can hear sounds from a very far direction that you can't hear during the day.
What is the cause?
Sometimes we feel that sounds from far away can be heard more clearly at night. As material for reflection or knowledge, this needs to be known to all of us. There are at least several reasons so that the noise at night is heard more clearly than during the daytime.
1. More calm
At night the atmosphere is calmer. Near us there are not many sound sources that make our ears can catch the existing sound. Although the sound is far away.
this is different during the daytime. During the day a lot of noise around us, ranging from the sound of vehicles passing by on the road to the sound of people around us. Because there is enough noise around us, our ears will tend to ignore the sounds that are close to us, and will ignore the sounds that the source is quite far away.
2. Wave refraction
Another factor that causes sound that is heard far more clearly at night is refraction of sound waves. In physics sound waves propagate faster in hot air, and propagate more slowly in cold air.
Sound waves that travel from hot air to cold air or vice versa, the sound waves will be refracted. This is similar to what happens to light waves that cause objects around us to look bumpy when the air is hot.
During the day, air temperatures in the atmosphere tend to be hotter than the temperatures around the surface of the earth. As a result, sound waves that head towards the earth will be refracted upwards, and the direction is further away from our ears.
Conversely, at night the temperature of the air around the earth's surface is hotter, so the sound waves that go towards the atmosphere will be refracted downwards. As a result, the direction of the sound waves becomes closer to our ears and the more we can hear clearly.
3. Interference Factor
Sound is a wave that can meet each other. This meeting is called interference. The effects of interference can amplify or weaken sound waves depending on the frequency or phase of the same or not. If the same phase will strengthen so that the sound is heard more clearly. But if the opposite will weaken the sound.
During the day there are many sound sources that have opposing phases so that the sound is weakened. But at night there are few sources of interference so interference does not occur. As a result the sound will be heard more clearly.
Thus my writing about the sound at night will be heard more clearly than in the daytime. Hopefully this article is useful for us all.
