What is Language Processing Disorder?
Language Processing Disorder effects the individuals ability to processes language. It can affect the expressive lanuage (what they say) and or the individuals receptive lanuage (How they understand what others say).
What are the symptoms of Language Processing Disorder?
- They appear to be frustrated because they have a lot to say, but they do not know how to say.
- When they express their feelings the words often come "right of the tip of their tongue".
- They may appear to feel depressed or sad especially because they struggle expressing their feelings.
- They most likeley have a poor attention to tasks/activities compared to those that are the similar age.
- They prefer more than often to be the "clown of the class" to take the pressure of themselves.
- They struggle with word finding, naming of objects and excessive use of fillers.
- They have a tendency to ignore or confusedby spoken questions and instructions.
- They respond to any off-topic questions that have no relevance to the question.
- They often speak in incomplete sentences.
- They have trouble recognising categories, sequences, associations and/or patterns.
What strategies can be employed to assist these learners?
These strategies where listed by the Learning Dissabilities Association of America:
Speak slowly and clearly and use simple sentences to convey information
Refer to a speech pathologist
Allow tape recorder for note taking
Write main concepts on board
Provide support person or peer tutor
Use visualization techniques to enhance listening and comprehension
Use of graphic organizers for note taking from lectures or books
Use story starters for creative writing assignments
Practice story mapping
Draw out details with questions and visualization strategies
