HERSTORY OF CLASSROOM DIVERSITY

in steemiteducation •  7 years ago  (edited)

I clench my teeth as I saw children sleeping beside the streets. I was on my way to school. The way we live is always different as well as our culture. It is heartbreaking that sometimes we cannot appreciate other people just because they are different from ours.

We descriminate them either because of their skin color, the way they talk or their physical features. The people that surrounds them tried to encourage them but sometimes it is also pull them down.

I passed my old school before, a university that I actually went in and I remember that in terms of diversity school has a lot of it. Different students in one school. As a teacher sometimes we cannot imagine how we did it.

School culture actually impact students success. How much more if there is a different culture in one classroom? How can a teacher treat them equally?

SCHOOL DIVERSITY

School is an institution in which we can see different cultures. For the teachers it is a very crucial for them to teach between learners in diversity. It is important for the teachers to acknowledge and reflect diversity. Teachers should take time to find ways on how to treat the students equally.

As a teacher we should:

Recognize their individual differences.

Specifically if it is racial differences. For example Asians share a common characteristics as well as the Caucasian. But there are times that even if they came from the same continent they still show differences. So as teachers we should recognize their individual uniqueness.

Inline the structure of your lessons to reflect their differences.

This will acknowledge and encourage students to also recognize and believe in their own capabilities eventhough they are different from others. This would also bring connection to each student since they can also collaborate with eachother. Recognizing their differences reduce conflict by treating them equally and fairly.

Make sure to know their background through reading or personal experiences.

As teachers supervising and facilitating them is very important. The process of learning involves a two way communication. It is all about transferring the knowledge you have to the students and at the same time we learn from them. In order to incorporate our learnings to them we need to know their background and foundations for us to acquire a new information like their interests and values.

Collaboration and Scaffolding

It is easy to tell the students to eat food but it takes time for them to learn it. As teachers we need to connect to them in order for us to be familiar with them. Sometimes a certain student can’t relate to a certain topic but others can actually do it. Teachers need to build blocks and help build framework for understanding.
