Last year my old friend and world famous DJ, producer and activist Cosmo Baker opened a branch of the premiere DJ school Scratch Academy, right here in Philadelphia. Scratch Academy (www.scratch.com) was founded by the late great Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC to teach the art of DJ'ing and turntabalism. With the addition of the Philly school it now has five locations around the US. I haven't seen any of the others, but this one is definitely bad ass!

I got to one of their recent events, but unfortunately not until after Cos had already left building... However I did get to check out the amazing space they have and play around with some of the many DJ set ups they have for their students to work on. They've got everything from the traditional turntable setups, to CDJs as well as a wide range of the newer controllers by Pioneer, Hercules and Numark (my personal favorite brand name in the world of DJ gear). It was beautiful! Like being a kid in a candy store...

Here I am pretending to mix, ha! :) In the background you can also see well-loved Philly DJ Mike Nyce (from the world famous Tastee Treats party) who was spinning some old-school classics.
