Steemit Photo Challenge Entry #3 ~ GARLIC - Wood Stove and WINE!

This photo was taken last summer and the reason I'm posting it now is because I have a new crop of Garlic that is ALMOST ready to be harvested AND a new batch of wine that will soon be bottled! garlic.jpg

The Wood stove is what we use to heat our off grid home in the winter. The garlic is harvested from the ground, cleaned like you see in the photo and braided and hung in the kitchen to be ready for use. The wine is bottled and aged for about 2 months before we start drinking it. Pictured is peach wine.

An enviable life guys. We have had a small garden that we've cultivated for a few years but seem to struggle with getting much output from it. Do you monitor soil health and acidity in your setup or is it more of a low tech, volume operation. I'm wondering how technical home food production needs to be in order to be relied upon for consistent output.

Its only really technical to start off. I always recommend people test their soil. Usually your country govt. extension office will do this for you for free if you bring them samples. Lime if you need to and then start adding manures. Rabbit manures is best. Goat and Sheep manure is good too. Horse is good but will bring in lots of weeds. Chicken and Cow is usually too hot and needs to be composted first. Bottom line if you keep adding natural compost materials, your garden will have most of the nutrients to be successful. But its always good to get it tested first. Some people test every year but I don't.

Thats a good suggestion. I harvested my first crop of garlic 2 weeks ago. Thay are drying right now, but I have a sence they might not be as garlicky as I hope for them to be. Soil sampling for fruits or vegtables that require a higher or lower Ph is always a good idea to know where your starting at.

I'll post pictures of this year later. The tops haven't really started dying yet.

What kind of garlic is that? My wife was speculating that it might be Elephant Garlic? I am curious what variety because it looks very large and very healthy.

No its not elephant. It's actually a small variety. We are growing a large to medium variety this year.

We just moved to our new homestead last month, we have been watching your videos on YT and have been inspired. Garlic is definitely on my garden planting list, I wanna braid it like Jaime and hang it in my kitchen, looks so fun!
