Queen Victoria
In November 1855, David Livingstone discovered an enormous fall of water which he called the Victoria Falls in honour of the Queen of Great Britain.
WHERE DID THE VICTORIA FALLS START FROM?
It is the Zambesi River which 'feeds' the Victoria Falls. David Livingstone was the first to discover
The river, during one of his many explorations. Tracking the upper reaches of the Zambesi, he succeeded in finding the exact point at which the river , by tumbling down through a narrow gorge, gushes out into the famous waterfalls. Its main jump, called booming smok by the makololo natives, is 122 metres high. Livingstone drew a map of the course of the Zambesi and the Victoris falls which was so precise that even today is still being used without the risk of anyone losing the way.
DAVID LIVINGSTONE
Scottish-born David Livingstone ( 1813-1873 ) was a missionary and a British explorer. In 1840 he graduated in Medicine and became a member of the London Missionary Society. He was sent to Kuruman in Africa. With the Purpose of founding missions and spreading the christian faith. But because of his great love for the Black Continent, he abandoned strictly religious tasks in order to become a great explorer. He was the first European to cross Africa from one coast to the other in a journey which streched him to impossible limits and which lasted three years ( 1853-1856 ). Leaving Kruman , a small town south of the Kalahari Desert, he reached the Zambesi River and decided to follow its course to the west. On 31 May 1854 he arrived at San Paolo in Luanda, Angola, on the Atlantic coast, accompanied on by his faithful beares from the Makolo people. Then he went on to follow the course of the river, this time towards the east and in May 1855 reached the indian Ocean, at Quelimane. Most of the journey he undertook on foot, discovering the wonderful Victoria Falls on the way.
