The AFP news agency selected the most curious images of the year that is going. A few days after the end of 2018 is a good time to summarize the year. But this time the news agency AFP decided to highlight the most unusual photos of the sport of the season.
Weah, president of Liberia.
It is not usual for a football legend to be reconverted after his retirement as a politician and much less to end up as the president of his country, but this is the case of George Weah, who on January 22 was sworn in as president of Liberia after having imposed himself clearly in the elections of this African country. Weah, 52, was one of the great African footballers of the 1990s and played, among other teams, in Monaco, Paris SG and Milan. In 1995 he received the Golden Ball for the best footballer of the year, being the only African player that has been distinguished with this award. Upon taking office, Weah promised employment and education in a country that still carries the terrible consequences of the civil wars that caused, between 1997 and 2003, 250,000 deaths.
Maradona joined the 'show' of Argentina in the World Cup.
The disappointing road of Argentina in the World Cup in Russia (eliminated in the second round after losing 4-3 against France) was further marred by the unfortunate 'show' of Diego Maradona in the stands. It was, above all, during the decisive game against Nigeria, in which the Albiceleste managed to pass the round of 16 with a last goal by Marcos Rojo (2-1), when the 'Golden Pibe' took more prominence than Lionel Messi and his companions. Maradona lived intensely the game and starred in all kinds of gestures. Effusive celebrations, two 'combs', easily decipherable insults in the reading of lips ... Until a nap and then an indisposition that made him have to receive medical attention.
Salah and Egypt in Grozny.
In Russia-2018 everything went wrong with the 'Pharaohs'. Mohamed Salah and his teammates concentrated in Chechnya ahead of the World Cup. A base camp visited by the controversial leader of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov, which was not to the liking of the international community. As if that were not enough, the team led by Argentina's Hector Cúper said goodbye to his first World Cup in 28 years in the first phase, with three defeats in as many games.
Nurmagomedov hits McGregor ... and all his team
The long-awaited mixed martial arts fight of the UFC 229 event between the Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov and the Irishman Conor McGregor in Las Vegas ended up punched ... And not only among the fighters. After months of looking for tickling, the Russian managed to subdue the Irish media. Enraged, and still in the octagon after angrily celebrating his victory, Nurmagomedov faced off with his rival's team, jumped out of the cage and began to beat McGregor's companions. The Irishman rushed to his aid but was attacked by members of the Russian team, to whom he also directed several blows.
A spectator loses sight in one eye in the Ryder Cup.
The French Corine Remande was hit in the eye on September 28 by a ball thrown by the American golfer Brooks Koepka in the Ryder Cup and ended up losing vision in the right eye. At first the authorities reported that there were no serious injuries but, after being examined in depth, it was discovered that Remande could not see again through that eye. The golf enthusiast announced that she would take legal action against the Ryder Cup, which was played for the first time on French soil (Saint Quentin in Yvelines) and ended up winning Europe by seven points of difference.
