Splinterlands: Failed in Modern!

Splinterfest was a great experience and the tournaments were just a preview of what great things the game continues to have in store for us users. However, it also highlighted the challenges in an ever evolving competitive environment. We have all been feeling for a number of Seasons now how the learning curve and meta continues to change as more players join and become competitive in modern league specifically. I experienced the same at the SplinterFest tournament for Modern where I could not get out of the first round.

There were also a number of challenges which I have since heard that the community has given good feedback on as it was tough to get our games going while still being able to listen what was going on in the event. This was unfortunate as some players had to choose between missing content or playing in the tournament. Some players even did not realize about the tournament being started and had missed the opportunity to compete. This is clearly something that the team has to work on in any future event of the size.

Since I knew that my weakest point was in the modern league given it is not where I play on ranked play most often, I started my tournament run here in order to then focus on the wild tournament afterwards. I found myself struggling for two main reasons: first, not having all the abilities unlocked as I am used to playing max level cards and second, not having some cards that are Wild format which I rely on quite a bit during my rank play. I also ran into just pure bad luck on some of the rulesets I had to go up against which were quite restrictive. On the other hand, it was fun to have the ability to play with all the new Riftwatchers cards which surely benefited me.

As I started to play, I started seeing the results of the early matches and it was not very good. In fact, I decided to take a break because I had started with a negative record so did not really have much motivation to continue forward. This is why I called it a fail as I knew it would be tough to get even past the first day of the tournament. However, when I came back to the computer a bit later after one of the panels I found myself in positive territory and in the top 15.

As I was looking at my last matches play out and I started to get a good win streak, I was encourage with the possibility of getting past the first day and into the top 16 tournament. However, one of the last games I had ended in a draw which moved me to 22nd place on the list. This eliminated me from the bracket tournament the next day. The experience was great as despite it not being my main play area, being able to place there was encouraging. I need to find myself more time to learn the meta within the modern league because it will help me improve some of the future gameplay as it becomes more relevant and busy with new players coming in.
