Is steemmonsters any good? Am I too late to the game?

After finding my feet again here on #steemit and seeing all these posts about #steemmonsters I think I might have to start playing.

My questions are:

Please help a complete novice, explain it to me like I was 10yrs old.

Am I already too far behind to catch up?
