Here's my plan on sketch. I'm gonna make a Pirate Cannon Themed Stage for Steem Cannon! I will be making custom enemies, cannon, bullet, particles, background, and tile for the game. You can see my visuals above.
I'm going to start with the Squid. Here's a much more detailed sketch:
![IMG20171216135933.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXniz75kVaHQhNKwDqq6qAuGpr9YqgacifYc7Hq2mkHF2/IMG20171216135933.jpg)
![IMG20171216135936.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmRxosjspKf3VF4rWhCyn7cQ4XAytmwkwocSh2qd7dVGMF/IMG20171216135936.jpg)
Those are the parts of the squid that I will enhance digitally so I can make the game character. Here's the steps I did to make it:
First, I start with a blank cyan background and pasted the 1st sketch there:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWWmPtQADK6VuRWsSSnJtz5UqSxJm6UCMLuDa1XnuqPX7/image.png)
Edited it using the Cutout tool under the Filter Gallery, with the following settings:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmcnPK8KirnLPsdv32thxBasJb94PefiA3Zmfyfty7zHbp/image.png)
Then I darkened some of the outlines by using the fill tool to the left:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmV3X81cjmJsVjuxXVP2kWZSaAAZPgRVvXY7DaLncL3T3R/image.png)
I used the magic wand tool to select the spaces outside the Squid's body:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmSVkFeXXay1ZzV7FJa9QWhCNp1uz6aYCXXFKZFKFECF6G/image.png)
Then, I erased all of it including the other excess parts of the layer, leaving me with just the Body:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQxUFS67e3f1PCdnwnZWVa6SL3NMK6dQeqLWgAuXYcG1p/image.png)
I added the other sketch next so we can add more parts to the squid:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmfJPUBfb5HJRqA65rEchZjFYEYG2mTaeYdci5bC6MsKju/image.png)
I made sure I kpet a duplicate copy of this layer hidden so that I can use it later when I need it. We're basically doing the same thing here. Here are the settings for the cut out tool:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmabUc1wGJQXBemmLHukn3ByN1cVABso8nhTdeoJ4nbXpW/image.png)
I darkened every outline a bit, as you can see here:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmRLoVPvYKFsjTVtH6zhNB2DHB3uccepaMCuQAHQQvmmg7/image.png)
Then proceeded with selecting the places that I will erase:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZ9dtMGMNNus8LN1UqCz3i6Cf17vkPe2PjH9WcHsZgfSR/image.png)
It would look like this, at first, but I will clean it up:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmPNdyz2f7niHppwTMi8Lf7twqbcAhpzhCBqSyzcHwfopV/image.png)
Here's the parts after a bit of cleaning up:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXQVn3cjE9Bd7mLjqhNSLkEQ89fhwbASGZc5CUBoBsT6r/image.png)
I've rearranged the squid parts and it now looks like this:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmdTUFsFmeiYRPXHr63KmvLNJpaRWJG96X4xjmx6ZkvFEH/image.png)
Next up is, coloring the squid. Here's how I colored it: I first colored the whole thing like this:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTUzkmeq5Rcf87yqPENHZsKcXxLfN4vAL7nK3w6oTJQAC/image.png)
Then I added multiply effect on the color's layer, to make it look like this:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmQTg5ieWoFVuVsMCSBqK1G1xvKAVz7Cb2rg22nwwZG1iH/image.png)
I merged all the parts and applied clipping mask to the colored layer so that it will not exceed the drawing:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYn5JHJmoRWieBLSHncZPjwygXio2auWJBTdRQ838gpsy/image.png)
I added some highlights by coloring it white:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmbMWGfQ4pprXnrzJVf39WRcSLfivzcU5S2X7EnY9kKBWy/image.png)
And some more highlights on another layer:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmd9LeSTr1rwuDGZH9CC31RE37BCPtsUdvVYmhRWRo6u2f/image.png)
On the following steps, I'm trying to add a bit more flare to the squid's design:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmZ3Jje9KJnSXLo8zVhPZ2tnLErAJUf1jX3DDbs4U1N8mw/image.png)
This happened when I added the exclusion effect on the additional color:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVoiMUys8AcEN8aTZ3M5aKjAP27eWb6PH7SbZbcAxNQ5w/image.png)
I manually drawn the outline for it on another layer underneath:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmNntNv8VKKJxn5nrXGzBRavCQRQkGeWudi1GQSgFVf92z/image.png)
This is how the tentacles would look:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYo4Q4ubh4wiD32Bqhf1FzpLCL74vf6kzMXZeQEF3YRBz/image.png)
They will be laser tentacles! Laser tentacle Giant Squid anyone?
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQma615sZZBNKWWawZeT1pYDPsfzBX79CCxDSb6CwxS4Kpn/image.png)
Edited it a bit to make it easier to color and easier to erase the unnecessary spaces:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdurx4JMAYsjFQk2X91Y3L12q7GuSdCioee5izLhCfm8U/image.png)
Here's what it looks like after coloring. I also added glow effect onto it:
![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmRFD5P81n67wYZhuZ3UHaMGzBpFCXZz52bC851y9EQ4vC/image.png)
And I've also added the 'suckers' earlier and made them floating beacons for the squid:
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWX5d7D2eqQfBp6XTCrH2TT7W28TKeGgXkNqFbSC1YEz9/image.png)
And here it is cropped and transparent:
![squid 1.png](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmPsAE5bxeNL4XrEEsP2RGEFjhxJzfKRWEkUcsReou2Gin/squid%201.png)

And here it is moving:

Thanks!

Cool characters, nice drawing. :)

Interesting style! Though I'd try to make the squid legs also in the same hand-drwan'ish style as the head :)
