How Much Steem Power Does a “Typical” Minnow Have?

@arcange has long provided useful statistics about the Steem blockchain. This post will draw on those stats. Any errors in number crunching are of course mine.

For purposes of simplicity, this post will equate 1,000,000 vests to 500 Steem Power (the actual number is currently a bit over 499.6 SP) and will use no more than one decimal place.

9250 Minnows have a total of 27,750 MVests. So we could simply divide 27,500 by 9250 and say that 1,500 Steem Power or 3.0 MVests is the average (mean). But what’s the median? (A refresher on the difference between mean and median.)

Why look at the median value? The differencebetween.com site says

Medians are specifically used in skewed distributions and represent data fairly better than the arithmetic mean.

And we all understand that Steem distribution is skewed.

9250 Minnows + 1970 Dolphins + 346 Orcas {{{hush}}} + 35 Whales
= the 11,601 largest accounts as measured by Steem Power.

So Minnows range from the 11,601st largest account up to the 2,352nd largest. Therefore the median size for a Minnow account is between the 6,997th and 6,996th largest.

We can find this from steemitboard.com, another of @arcange’s projects.

It turns out that the median Minnow has 1,098 Steem Power or roughly 2.2 MVests.

So “on average”, Minnows have 1,500 Steem Power, but a “typical” Minnow has 1,098 Steem Power.

Just as the entire universe of Steem accounts has a skewed distribution with a “hockey stick” of orcas {{{hush}}} and whales, so does the Minnow class of Steem accounts have a skewed distribution.
